Wirsu

*Special note: Wirsu was created as a candidate for Mytopa Weyr, an adoption weyr which later closed. Since she did not have much of a description, she has been altered and her background story written for Falas Weyr.

Impressed at Falas Weyr

Wirsu is aged 18 Turns. She is healthy, quite tall and muscular, has tan skin and wavy, sandy blond hair cut to her upper back. Her eyes are medium brown. She is attractive, although not incredibly beautiful.

She is the only child of dragonrider parents. Unusually, she was raised mostly by her parents and fostered out only occasionally, when they were too busy. Her relationship with her parents is very close, better than most of her peers.

Wirsu is active, extroverted and sociable, but tends to be somewhat self-centred, possibly because of her parents' attention and care. She tends to be a little thoughtless towards other people without meaning to, but she is likeable and friendly.

Pets

Highflare from Lauren's Adoption Agency
Highflare, a blue male firelizard, was named for his habit of chewing firestone and flaming Thread like his bigger dragon cousins. He has been very dedicated to flaming Thread despite his small size.

Klah Drinker from Naronis Weyr
Klah Drinker, a female green firelizard, has a strange liking for the Pernese beverage klah, which started after she took a sip from Wirsu's cup out of curiousity. Now she gets a saucer of klah every morning.

Story

As the only child of dragonriders, Wirsu had always wanted to Impress and become a dragonrider just like her parents. But she failed to Impress on her first try at Mytopa Weyr.

Her parents came for her as she walked slowly off the Hatching Grounds. At first they kept silent as they accompanied her out. Then her father broke the silence as they walked out into the Weyrbowl.

"This isn't the end, you know," he said softly. "You're young enough to try again for the next clutch."

"I know," said Wirsu. "But I don't know why I failed this time. I was so sure, and yet . . . What if I fail next time too?"

Her mother looked intently at her. "I don't know if I should say this," she finally said, "but I feel I have to be honest with you. Maybe it's a flaw in you that prevents you from Impressing."

"What?" asked Wirsu.

"This may hurt you," her mother said with a sigh, "I'm sure you know that dragons don't choose their riders based on their looks. It's what's inside that counts, and also whether the rider is suitable for the dragon."

She continued, "Impressing is more than just getting a dragon. You must love and care for the dragon more than yourself. And I'm afraid you don't seem to be able to do that. Wirsu, Impressing is about giving yourself to the dragon, not getting a dragon. You have to change your self-centred attitude."

Wirsu stood dumbstruck for a while, then whispered, "I don't think I can change myself. I'm sorry."

Her mother suddenly hugged her, saying, "Don't worry, we'll still love you, with or without a dragon. You don't have to change yourself to please us. Just do what you think is best."

"Trust the dragons. Since they chose you to be a candidate, you must have what it takes to Impress. And like your mother said, maybe you haven't met the right dragon. One who will accept you for what you are," said her father.

"Thank you," said Wirsu gratefully, and smiled. "Let's go home."

Some days later, Wirsu returned to her home weyr from a swim in the lake, trailed by her firelizards. Her parents were in the weyr. They seemed quite excited and were discussing something in low voices.

"I'm back!" she called. Her parents looked up and beckoned her to come over.

"I just came back from Mytopa Weyr," said her father. "I heard from the Weyrwoman that they were leaving Pern."

"What? They can't just go like that! What about me?" Wirsu cried, shocked.

"Don't worry. We've found another Weyr for you. It's got eggs on the Sands right now. You can be a candidate for Impression there," he said.

"What's it called?" asked Wirsu.

"It's called Falas Weyr. It's on an island in the south," said her mother. "Come on, get changed and I'll bring you there."

Wirsu was already running to her clothes chest to get some clean clothes. "Just wait a bit, I'll be done soon!" she shouted.

And this time, she thought to herself, I won't let this chance slip by.

Her firelizards, sensing her excitement, squeaked and flew in circles above her as she walked towards the entrance of the weyr.

They came out of between above Falas Weyr. Wirsu was with her mother on her green, with her father on his blue following closely behind, and of course the firelizards. The two dragons circled down and landed neatly in the Weyr.

"We've already spoken to the Searchriders. All you have to do is introduce yourself to them and see if they'll accept you," said her father, pointing at a group of riders and dragons. "Go on, Wirsu."

Wirsu walked towards the Searchriders, determined to get accepted this time. The riders had noticed her walking towards them. There were three of them, two women and a man.

Finally she stood in front of them. "I'm Wirsu, candidate from Mytopa Weyr," she said. "I was told to come here to be accepted as a candidate."

The man frowned slightly, trying to recall her name. Then he nodded and said, "Ah, I remember now. Your parents met with us just now. Anyway, I'm P'mir and these are my fellow Searchriders Blizska and Serzona. We'll have our dragons check you out. Come on!" He waved to her to follow him to three dragons near them, two greens and a blue.

Wirsu stood in front of the three dragons as they stared at her with their glistening eyes. They seemed to reach a conclusion and turned away. Their riders stood some distance away talking.

Finally, P'mir came over smiling. "You've been accepted as a candidate. Welcome to Falas Weyr. Now go tell your parents the good news."

Wirsu immediately ran joyfully over to where her parents stood waiting.
