Shadow of the Fire
Prologue

Lightning flashed off in the distance, lighting up the hallway like a star going super-nova. The soul occupant jumped and let out a startled yelp, clutching his blanket protectively. His brilliantly red hair, the color of passion, was tousled and fell into wide plum eyes. He scurried the rest of the way to his parent’s room and was about to knock when his mother cried, “no! We’re not telling him!”
Ran Fujimiya stopped and frowned. His parents never fought, what was going on? He lightly pressed his ear to the door, listening over the thunder and rain pattering on the roof.

“We have to…him….he’s……ours.” His father’s voice was muffled and there were words the child couldn’t make out.

“Not now! It could….matize him. We…to wait.”

“When? He’s sixth….month! If we wait till he’s….he would hate us.”

“I suppose…But I…bad lying…him.”

“So do I…”

Ran narrowed his plum eyes and decided not to bother his parents. Hate them? Why would he ever hate them? They thought something would hurt him if they told him. It wouldn’t hurt him, he had to be strong, for Aya-chan. Nothing could hurt him, he would make sure of it. He’d prove to his parents he could be strong like his father and they’d see.
Stiff-chinned, he walked back to beg and curled up for sleep. The thunder flashed, but he refused to be afraid.
