Shadow of the Fire
Chapter 2

Dr. Hikaru absently grabbed the Fujimiya folder out of his file cabinet and opened it up to find the blood sample. He grabbed today’s sample, which had just come back and was about to put it in when he noticed something. They were two totally different people’s blood. He looked at the folder and decided he needed to take a vacation. It read Aya Fujimiya, Ran’s sister. But that was weird…The samples were totally different. Even with a disease, Ran’s blood pattern would look something like his sisters. Hikaru grabbed Ran’s folder and pulled out the sample. He placed it next to Aya’s and his laser eyes widened. They were totally different; they couldn’t have been related. Yet Ran’s record said nothing about being adopted…. Hikaru quickly type Ran’s name in the hospital database.
It had classified marks slapped all over it. Hikaru cracked his fingers and began hacking into the database. He must have been getting rusty, for he only got to a part when it said Ran was being adopted from the Hitomi Orphanage. But the papers weren’t complete. There were no signatures. He decided to call Mr. Fujimiya first thing in the morning.

Ken yawned heavily, shading his mouth with his hand as he stumbled down the stairway of the Weiss apartment in only his boxers. He gave Aya a peachy grin as she rolled her eyes at him. He was the only one other than Aya and Sakura who knew about their relationship. He had caught the two girls kissing in Aya’s room and had promised not to tell.

“Sakura and I are going shopping after work.” She informed him, sipping at a coup of coffee. Though two years of her life had gone by, Sakura had quickly grown into her age. While she was still childish and innocent at times, she was also very serious and hard willed.

“Okie.” Ken replied sleepily as he flopped down into a chair. He heard a muffled groan from up stairs and smacked a hand to his forehead. Aya blinked and raised an eyebrow at him. “Yohji and Omi at it again…”

“What!? Those two!?” Aya looked shocked. “I thought Yohji liked girls…”

Ken shrugged and replied, “He’s bisexual.” The purple haired girl chuckled and turned back to her fashion magazine. A squeal sounded from above and Ken glared at the ceiling. He threw an apple at it and yelled, “SHUT UP YOU TWO!”

“Fuck you!” Yohji shot back.

“I don’t take favors!” Ken grinned when he heard an outraged squawk from above. Yohji powered down the stairs and launched himself bodily at the soccer player. The brunette yelped and the two tumbled to the ground. A loud and violent scruffle ensued.

“STOP!” A sharp shout accented with the slamming of a fist against the frigerator door caused the two assassins to freeze. Ran’s handsome face was flushed with anger and his amthymest eyes crackled with rage. Omi took a few steps away from the red head, moving to hide behind Aya.

“Dah..Um, well..I uh, better go cuz meandOmihavework!!” Yohji grabbed his young lover and ran up stairs.

“You should be in bed!” Aya cried when Ran slumped against the fridge.

“I’m…fine…” The red head promptly crumpled too the ground.

“Oh shit!” Ken caught his leader and hauled him to his feet. “Better get your ass in bed.” The assassin grunted as he stomped up the hall, his heavy footsteps causing Ran’s headache to throb. Ken heard the phone ring and cursed quiet loudly.

“Shut up.” Ran snapped, causing the brunette to wince.

“Sorry.” Ken murmured as he laid the red head down onto his bed. Ran instantly curled up into a fetal position as the ringing stopped. Aya must have picked up the phone.

Aya was already back in her magazine when the phone rang. She grabbed the cordless sitting next to her and turned it on.

“Hello?”

“May I speak to Mr. Ran Fujimiya?”

“He’s sick at the moment, can I take a message?”

“I need to speak with him or his sister immediately.”

“This is Aya Fujimiya. Is something wrong?” Fear overcame her.

“Ran is going to be fine, its just a bad flu. This is Dr. Hikaru.” The doctor stated. “I was calling because apparently…Well, I don’t know how to say it, but if these tests are correct you two are not related at all.”

“What!?”

“I looked in adoption records and found nothing final. I did find a certificate stating Ran was being adopted by the Fujimiya’s, but there were no signatures.”

“How could this have happened?”

“Well, about 19 years ago, when Ran was only a baby, an orphanage burned down two days after this certificate is dated. At the time, the place was having financial troubles, so the director, whose signature is missing, may have never signed it because she died in the fire.”

“Doctor, do you have time for me to talk with you?”

“Yes. I’m off today.”

“Can we meet in the coffee shop across the street from the city library?”

“Sure.”

“See you there. Bye.” Aya hung up and stared blankly at the phone. She placed it back on the table and tore up to her room. Ken frowned as he was almost run over by the purple haired girl.
