Nancy Thompson, a teenage girl whose dreams are being plagued (and whose friends are being killed) by a hideous creature known as Freddy Krueger (Robert Englund). Turns out Freddy was a child killer acquitted on a technicality, and roasted alive in his boiler room by a mob of irate parents. He's back and visiting the sins of the parents on the children, read Nancy and her friends, including her boyfriend, Glen (Johnny Depp in his first role). Nancy learns how to get rid of Freddy and succeeds, but not before he kills three of her friends and her mother (Ronee Blakley) through their dreams.

Freddy (as always, Robert Englund) is back (again). He quickly dispatches the three survivors of Nightmare 3. It seems that Alice (Lisa Wilcox), a friend of one of the Nightmare 3 survivors, Kristen (Patricia Arquette in 3, Tuesday Knight in 4), has the ability to absorb people's dream powers when they die. Freddy starts using Alice to get to her friends until Alice finally blasts him out of the water with her accumulated dream abilities.

Alice is pregnant by Dan (Danny Hassel), her co survivor of Nighmare 4.
