What Systemic Therapy can offer:
Systemic Therapy as an approach can be used across the range of presented problems but is particularly indicated in the following situations.
When the presented difficulties affect the family and/social systems.
Family/social systems could form part of the solution.
More than one member of the system presenting with symptoms of distress, e.g. depression in couples.
Client choice, i.e., they see the difficulties affecting their systems and see the potential for change within. (Intrapsychic shift to interpersonal understanding)
Specific conditions based on
research evidence. | |
As an addition to individual approaches to facilitate family /social system to become amenable to change.
Complex interactional dynamics.
When other systems need to be involved, e.g. school, work, neighborhood ect. An example such as trauma (e.g. suicide) effecting a number of people.
To offer an alternative perspective when other approaches feel stuck. |
What type of therapy do I offer?
Direct work
Systemic therapy incorporates a variety of approaches and it is important to create a therapeutic fit taking into account the context and meaning attributed to the difficulties. The focus could therefore be on understandings , actions, feelings either in the past , the present or the future.
Consultation
Consultation may be usefully employed; e.g. As a case discussion to facilitate a different way of thinking about client's situations or as a particular Crisis consultation.
