Victory Mk II Star Destroyers

The Victory Mk II-class Star Destroyer was never produced in large numbers since they did not come into service until after the Clone Wars had ended. It has several significant advantages over the original Victory Mk I-class, such as the powerful Hoersch-Kessel engines which together with trading off shield and hull strength increases the ship's speed and manoeuvrability. While he VSD I was made with orbital bombardment in mind, the VSD II is made for deep space combat. Although the VSDII has the same distinctive atmospheric manoeuvring surfaces at its flanks, this vessel is incapable of entering an atmosphere due to lack of repulsorlifts. The Imperial navy used these ships mainly for anti-rebel and -pirate sector patrols.

Strike-class Cruisers

  • 053
  • 054

The Strike-class Cruiser was long time unique by its modular design. To many the cruiser's combat capabilities come as quite the surprise. It was designed to be mass produced in a limited amount of time due to the prefabricated component sections. This reduces construction time and it also dramatically lowers the cost of each vessel. It was a triumph of Imperial modular technology. The Strike Cruiser maintains 258 compartments, two of which are brigs. The interiors of the prefabricated sections can be easily modified for specific missions such as troop transport, planetary assault, prefabricated garrison base deployers or carrying a full squadron of starfighters after a short stay at a spaceyard. This enables the ship to change the mission profile of the vessel without the need to build entire new classes of ships to fill needed roles. The weakness of this vessel is that entire systems or weapon batteries can be knocked out by well placed shots as the modular connections fail. Or in combat, if the parts of the Strike Cruiser's internal structure are destroyed the vessel will break itself apart. At the time of the Strike Cruiser's design, the warship's weakness was considered only a minor flaw. These ships are tough, versatile and well armed. The shields are very capable and the ship is often deployed in large numbers. These ships were in service before the Battle of Yavin. Unfortunately, the Rebels and several other groups have been able to obtain a few of these ships for their terrorist or pirate uses.

Immobilizer 418-class Cruisers

  • 055
  • 056

Gravity well ships, or interdictors, came into existance many months after the Battle of Yavin. After the Empire learned that it was possible to generate an artificial gravity well after an accidental discovery in the Sedri System, the data collected was researched for many months. Finally Imperial scientists discovered how to create gravity well generators, which were then mounted in the first gravity well ship, the newly constructed Immobilizer-418 cruisers. Interdictors are used by the Empire to prevent ships from entering hyperspace or to pull ships out of hyperspace into realspace into an ambush or customs inspection. They are placed on the perimeter of a battle area or potential battle area, giving the captains of the interdictors a clear view of the battle, so they can precisely target the placement of gravity wells to prevent Rebel ships from escaping into hyperspace. Gravity well ships are now a fairly common sight in the galaxy, and every fleet should have at least one. For armament, this speciality cruiser only has anti-fighter lasers, and needs to be guarded from other capital ships.

The Dreadnaught was originally designed and commissioned by the Old Republic. At their prime time, they were the largest warships in service. Today they barely fit the class of medium cruisers. The standard Dreadnaught in the Imperial Navy is not significantly different from the original used in the Old Republic's. The ship maintains its weaponry. Even after refitting, this ship's sublight speed barely matches the speed of the Victory I-class Star Destroyer and still requires an extremely large crew. The reason for the large crew was that this ship made little use or no use of droid assistance. The Empire was able to add flight decks in its dreadnaughts to allow 12 fighters as well as 4 shuttlecraft onboard. Although sluggish, it remains a powerful ship in use in both the Imperial and the New Republic navies.

Carrack-class Cruisers

The Carrack is an old design but is proven effective and as such, still serves in the Imperial Navy. It is modular in structure and very resistant to damage. Unfortunately this compartmentalization system takes up too much interior space to fit the Carrack with hangars. At only 350 metres in length, the Carrack is comparable with a Dreadnaught in firepower. It is also one of the fastest ship types in the Imperial Navy.

Nebulon-B Class Frigates

These seven engine ships were seen by the Empire as the solution to the rebel and pirate problem. Since the Imperial Navy began assigning these vessels to escort duty, the Rebels found it deadly attacking Imperial convoys. They have have several docking fixtures for light and medium freighters, sophisticated sensors and deep-space, multi-frequency antennas, allowing them to function as long-range scouts or relay battle information to a command ship. Though they are medium sized combat vessels, they have more weaponry then any other combat vessel in their class except the Carrack-class Cruiser. Their contingent of starfighters makes it the superior vessel. Eventually they were phased out in favour of the newer and faster Lancer frigates.

Assault-class Frigates

The Assault Frigate is a four-engine ship that was created in small numbers by the rebel alliance by converting Old Republic dreadnaughts. Manoeuvrability, speed, and fuel efficiency has been increased, and large scale automation with droids and computer controlled stations reduces the need for crew. This came however at loss of internal space for hangars and troops. To remedy this situation, 20 external docking fixtures has been scattered along the hull. They may be used by standard transports, light freighters and starfighters. In addition, a modified assault shuttle may ride on atop of the superstructure. These open docking facilities creates a certain risk to the ship, since any attached vessel may be exposed to enemy fire. The original armament was changed to less heavy weapons and more laser cannons, which lowers the ships punch in a standup fight against other capital ships, but significantly improves its fighter defences.

After the Battle of Yavin and the destruction of the first operational Death Star, Rebel starfighters were considered very dangerous to Imperial shipping by the admiralty. The Lancer frigate was the answer. It is designed as a platform dedicated solely for the destruction of rebel starfighters. It remains the foremost of all anti-fighter vessels in the galaxy, though it is expensive and thus not deployed in large numbers. Another reason is that rebel fighter attacks didn't increase as much as expected. They come into their own when protecting Imperial convoys or when attacking enemy starfighter bases. The 20 Corellian AG-2G Quad Laser Cannons are specifically calibrated for use against high-speed and manoeuvrable starfighters. The weapons have superior tracking and targeting capabilities and are mounted on elevated towers to provide an increased field of fire. Each bank of quad lasers is fed by a single power generator. Unfortunately, as formidable as this ship performs against fighters, it has no heavy weaponry and is at loss if attacked by another capital ship. Another problem is that is fairly slow at sublight, giving rebel fighters an opportunity to outrun it and flee if given a small lead.

Simply named the "Imperial" corvette, since this ship was developed for the Empire, it is best known as a customs corvette, enforcing the law in the Rim. Aptly armed and blindingly fast at sublight, it makes an ideal vessel to hunt pirates and other lightly armed insurgents. Additionally, it has long range turbolasers (75 SU). Unfortunately, a few of these vessels has also found their way to said pirates.

System patrol craft are any of a number of capital ship design that fall between the 100 meter minimum and 250 meters, although some larger ships are relegated to this duty due to lack of available vessels. They follow the primary directive to apprehend smuggling vessels, but they also serve as a star system's first line of defense against pirates, rebels, and hostile aliens as well. Most of the vessels that fall into this class are either designed or modified for speed and fire power. Built to engage in "pre-jump" combat, patrol craft make maximum use of speed and maneuverability to catch fleeing vessels before they can escape to hyperspace. System patrol craft typically contain no hyperdrive engines, instead relying on powerful sublight engines to make their way within a system.

Following the Battle of Endor, the remnant fleets of the Empire began raiding New Republic convoys for supplies. It soon became as much of a problem to New Republic shipping as the Rebel Alliance had been to the Empire. One of the most effective ships used by Imperial forces in this period is the Vibre Class Assault Cruiser, designed specifically for privateering and introduced shortly before Mon Mothma's resignations as Chief of State. It is plated with matte-black armour with a layer of stealth coating bonded to it. The shape of the ship is dictated by its mission profile. The Vibre typically uses its stealth equipment to sneak within strike range of larger Rebel capital ships, disables it with ion cannons, latch onto the hull and uses cutting lasers to open it. A squadron of Zero-G spacetroopers then enters the larger ship to take control of it.
