Why Technology?

I know I'm using a computer. But I really am against them. Technology is good to some extent -- it brings light into our homes and allows us to communicate through telephone wires. However, some of it is not needed. Technology is replacing intelligence these days. People use calculators instead of their brains. Computers instead of their books. Internet instead of a grocery store. Life was fine back in the day when there was none of that extra garbage. There is no reason for it; it only increases laziness and stupidity.

I don't like how technology is constantly becoming "better." Some things are better about the new things, but they get rid of some of the good things. All the new bells and whistles that come along with the new technology these days are not needed. The stuff from the past was fine. Tis nice to have telephones, color televisions, video games, etc. But cell-phones, CDs/DVDs, other upgraded things are not needed. I wouldn't mind technological advances so much if they didn't get rid of the old version in the process. But they DO. The old stuff becomes obsolete, and we are forced to buy the new version and pay the extra money for features we don't necessarily want!

Computers keep being produced. Yeah they're faster and they have more memory, but ya know, we don't really need that stuff. Patience is a virtue; searching the Internet for information is faster than looking through books for it, so be grateful for what you have. If you can't appreciate the "slow" speed of the computer, then go back to using books and a paper and pen. (New versions of AOL come out every few months too.) New computers are so annoying, because you have to upgrade your computer if you want certain software. And again, sometimes the new stuff isn't even that great.
Windows - My first Internet computer was a laptop that I got for free in 1999. It was an early 90s one with Windows 3.1 and like a 14k modem. I struggled to keep 20mb of free memory. (Once I had 0 free bytes.) It was barely enough for the Internet to run. I had to run Aim separately. Despite the low memory though, I like it better than the higher versions of Windows because Windows 3.1 was immune to viruses and it had a better set-up. It didn't have the stupid Start button. It had Program Manager, which would appear as a desktop icon. You click it, and it opens the folder with all the computer programs in it -- File Manager, Control Panel, Games, etc. The Start button is annoying, because if you want to access something, you have to click Programs, and go through all these steps to get to whatever program you want. And if your mouse moves somewhere accidentally, then the thing you had highlighted disappears, and you have to do it all over again. The old laptops had a better mouse too; it didn't have that silly flat pad that you put your finger on; it had a plastic ball near where the screen was that you just rolled your finger on. Tis easier to navigate than the flat pad thing. I don't know why they couldn't have kept the 3.1 style. *_* I guess twas just another way to make money.
Media Player - Everything was fine with my old version of Windows Media Player. Then I updated it. Now I can't burn CDs or look at anime in full screen. The new version of Media Player doesn't even play some types of videos that the classic media player did. I TRIED going back to the old version using using the download from oldversion.com, but the old media player just wouldn't delete from my computer, and it wouldn't let me install the old version if I already had the new version installed! And yes, I tried all ways possible to get rid of it, but none worked. (Except formatting. Sorry, but that is one thing I just will not do. Note.)
Aim - On my old laptop, my version of Aim was 1.0, which had the advantage of being able to look up people's e-mails and find their sns; the new versions don't always find the sns. I still have and use Aim 1.0 for that reason. Also, the old version allowed you to edit your AIM preferences without being logged on. The new version of AIM does have its good points, like buddy icons, longer away messages, file transfers, direct connect, and saved buddylists. But why did they have to get rid of all the good stuff AIM 1.0 had?! Oh yeah, and another gripe I have with AOL is THEY KILLED THE WARN BUTTON! I HAD TO RETIRE FROM CLICKING BECAUSE NOW I CAN'T WARN ANYONE! [huff]
Firefox - There are always new updates to the Firefox browser. Why? All they do is cause me problems! My add-ons and themes are no longer compatible because of the new version! And I used to be able to have Altavista.com & Dictionary.com as search engines, but no more! I TRIED going back to the old version using using the download from oldversion.com, but Firefox turned out all messed up and wouldn't work right! See, they trick you into updating (there's no option to decline forever!), and then you're stuck with a crappy new version!

Video Games: Gameboy Advance -- tis supposed to be better than Gameboy Color, but I don't notice any change. It just has a different look and smaller cartridges -- doesn't that mean the games are shorter? So they're actually ripping us off. And then within a year of that being made came Gameboy SP, then Gameboy DS, then DS Lite. Each time, there's just a few small things added to make you pay the extra money. What is the point of making so many new things that are basically the same as the old thing? The only purpose of it is to make more money off the consumer. It wouldn't be so bad if they kept making the old Gameboy Color games, but they don't. I wanted to get Dragon Warrior II for Gameboy Color, but since they don't make them anymore, I never will.

Cell-phones: Who needs them? Except for emergencies or something. But how often is there one of those? There's always the good ol' call boxes out on the free ways. And pay phones. For how often there is an emergency, cell-phones are not needed. 700 million people were talking on a cell phone at a single moment in 2006.* People are on cell-phones way too much of their life. There are so many people who can't imagine their lives without a mobile that a word has been invented to describe them: Cyborgs.* These people bring their cell phones with them to school, work, driving, even to the movie theater! When people tell the audience to turn off their cell-phones, I always hear one go off anyway! Nothing is so important that you have to carry around that stupid cell-phone everywhere you go. Whatever it is can wait. I hope they all get brain tumors from the electric waves.

Everywhere I go, people are either talking on their cell-phone or blasting their ears out with their iPod. What ever happened to good old fashioned silence? People can't think anymore because they're bombarded with so much NOISE. But maybe that's the point. The government doesn't want us to think. Dumb people are easier to control. So keep on yacking away and going deaf. You only have yourself to blame for your stupidity.

CDs and DVDs are another useless advancement in technology. They are no better than cassettes or video tapes. People just think they are, because they're "new." Listen to a cassette, listen to a cd. Can you tell the difference in sound quality? Listen to a video tape, listen to a dvd. Can you tell the difference in sound quality? Don't cheat by already knowing before hand which one is which! If you can tell the difference in sound quality, it is very slight. CDs and DVDs cost way more than cassettes and video tapes cost. It's just another "new thing" to get you to spend more for the same old product. There are good things about cds and dvds that cassettes and video tapes don't have. For instance, you can select what song you want to listen to on a cd without having to fast forward and rewind all over the place to find it. DVDs have all these extra bonuses like scene selection and behind the scenes stuff. But do you really need that stuff? Who actually watches behind the scenes stuff and the like? I certainly don't. I just want to watch my movie or show and be done with it. Though, I do like how DVDs let you choose which language to view my anime in . . . but ya know, video tapes came separately in dubbed and subbed. And everyone who prefers dubbed isn't going to watch subbed, and everyone who prefers subbed isn't going to watch dubbed. Having both on the DVD is again, just another way to get more money out of you for a bonus you're not going to use. And CDs and DVDs do have flaws! You can't record on them! When you stop them, you lose your place and have to start it from scratch! Fast forwarding and rewinding on a dvd is almost as slow as watching it normally! You have to hold them in a certain way so as not to scratch them (which happens easily)!
Secondly, if we must have CDs around (and we do, because all the companies stop making the old cassettes), why buy them? Usually people only get a CD because it's by their favorite band or has ONE good song on it that they know and love. $20 for one song? Might as well download it off the internet for a dollar. Or . . . not buy anything at all. There's radio, ya know. Radio has a wide variety of music at no cost. Sure there's commercials, but who cares? It's free! Plus, you can turn it off when there's commercials. Or switch to a different station. Get a digital boombox like me, program twenty stations on it, and just press the button to switch to a different one when there's commercials on one. There's never commercials on every single station at the same time. Better listen to the radio now, before they start charging you for that too.
"Radio . . . just like an iPod . . . without having to download 2000 songs."

Change is progress, but progress is not always needed. Technology change is fine up until you get to the point where the new things being created are not really that new, but just a way to make more money off you. As technology increases, wisdom decreases. Bombs are created without a second thought. Computers and televisions are in all of our homes and take over our lives so we have no time for family. Where are the days that children were occupied playing jacks? Going out in the sun-shine and enjoying life? Real life. Not a virtual one stuck on the computer.
Read this song by Zager Evans called "In the Year 2525." It was written in the 60s, but you'll see how true it is about our society today. I cry every time I hear it, because tis so true.

In the year 2525,
if man is still alive,
if woman can survive,
they may find...
In the year 3535,
ain't gonna need to tell the truth, tell no lie,
everything you think, do and say,
is in the pill you took today.
In the year 4545,
you ain't gonna need your teeth, won't need ur eyes.
You wont find a thing 2 chew;
nobody's gonna look at you.
In the year 5555,
your arms hanging limp at your sides,
your legs got nothing to do;
some machine's doing that for you.
In the year 6565,
you won't need no husband, won't need no wife;
you'll pick your son, pick your daughter too,
from the bottom of a long glass tube.
In the year 7510,
if God's a-coming, He ought to make it by then;
maybe He'll look around Himself and say
"Guess it's time for the judgment day."
In the year 8510,
God's gonna shake His mighty head;
He'll either say "I'm pleased where man has been"
or tear it down, and start again.
In the year 9595,
I'm kinda wondering if man is gonna be alive;
he's taken everything this old earth can give,
and he ain't put back nothing.
Now it's been 10,000 years,
and man has cried a billion tears.
For what, he never knew;
now man's reign is through,
but through eternal night,
the twinkling of starlight
so very far away,
maybe it's only yesterday.
None of you probably care enough to do it, but if you do, read a book called Fahrenheit 451. It was also written decades ago, but shows what is becoming of our society today. The thought of what is happening to the world is utterly disgusting. Technology is becoming such a vast part of our lives that if tis to be gone someday, humans won't know how to function without it. Take heed, for twill be the end of us all.
