Why Medicine?

The art of medicine consists in amusing the patient while nature cures the disease. - Voltaire
Some of these pages are just to express my opinion on things and don't apply to everyone. This is one of those pages. I don't believe in medicine. That doesn't mean you should agree with me. It never works for me, but I suppose it can work for others. Whenever I've taken medicine (cough medicine and pain reliever like Advil), it never works. Medicine is just a thing that is there to make you spend your money, claiming to relieve your ailments, but in reality all tis is a placebo effect. So I don't see any point on wasting money on something that doesn't work. Tisn't natural either. I don't believe in taking supplements that interfere with nature's way. Tis part of life to get diseases and viruses to get rid of the weak, or just lower the population. Colds strengthen your immmune system anyway, and I heard that if you always take medicine when you get a cold, your cold gets worse and you are more apt to get another one, because your immune system isn't working as hard to fight off the virus, thus weakening the defense system when the next virus comes. If you are meant to have a cold, take it like you should; don't try to stop the cough and all that. The medicine doesn't work anyway, and most of them taste nasty. (Nyquil . . . blah. . . .) If you did a lot of exercise the other day, and you feel pain the next day, it's your own fault that you're hurting. No need to take medicine. The pain will go away soon enough. No pain, no gain, right? What doesn't kill you makes you stronger.

I also don't believe in organ transplants and such. Humans can only live so long, and when tis their time to go, let them go. Why prolong the inevitable? The population is high enough. A few deaths won't hurt anything. Besides, when you get old like that, tis torture to keep living, even though most would want to hang on to life anyway because they fear death. Why live life barely hearing, barely able to move, barely able to remember, barely able to think? It gets to the point where you're just a shell of a person, doing nothing. Why live like that? That's not living at all. That's worse than death!

Ya, so this is why I'm going to be a psychologist, not a psychiatrist.

Update 3 years later (2007): Speaking of psychology, I might as well mention that I think a disorder is only a disorder if you're feeling the way you do for no reason except biological reasons (like depression caused by seratonin reuptake inhibitors being blocked, not because your boyfriend just dumped you [which would be a normal reaction]). Medication is just used to make you more normal, even cold medicine. Just like soma in the book Brave New World. "If you feel depressed, take soma and all your problems will be solved! Because unhappiness is an illusion!" Medication makes you more machine-like, more predictable, more controllable. Except in the case of hysterical violent "abnormals," I do not believe that medicine should be used to change the way people are, ESPECIALLY if their "condition" is caused by external factors and not biological ones.
