Letter from Nicol to a Miss Whitelaw

North Camp Aldershot

[27 November 1856]

My dear Miss Whitelaw,

I beg most sincerely to thank you for the precious little book you were so kind to assign me - which I have read with great pleasure. I like this Camp much better than I expected I would have done. I hope we may remain here during the winter - we have had much instances of the awful uncertainty of human life lately in Camp - one of the sergeants dropped down dead the other day and many officers of different [...] here have likewise been called suddenly into the presence of the 'Almighty' warning us whose days of mercy are still continued to pray that we may not be numbered amongst the dead until we are numbered amongst the redeemed in 'Christ'. This is rather deviating from my usual style of writing and might appear ridiculous to many of my companions but few of my companions who have commenced this military career with me have had so many opportunities of seeing the folly of rejecting salvation until the last hour, when we can have no certainty that our painful sighs and incoherent prayers will be heard before the 'Throne of Grace' -

I sincerely hope that Mr and Mrs Hill are well and also the young ladies - and with many thanks and kind regards I remain

yours very sincerely

N. Grahame
