[Copy of letter written to his father]

Sebastopol

[14 Sept 1855]

My dear Father,

I wrote to you a few hurried lines on the 10th inst. Stating that I had escaped with slight wounds from the Assault on the "Redan"

I shall endeavour to write you a longer letter by this Mail as the last time I wrote to you I felt rather confused. I now feel perfectly well but my neck is rather stiff still -

My Company being the senior Comp'y of the Reg't was told off to lead the storming party. We consequently suffered very severely as we received the first Volley of Grape and Minie Bullets. However we rushed on regardless of everything until we came to the great ditch. When we arrived there we found very few scaling ladders in position - (The General having given word for the storming party to charge too soon, consequently on our rush out we knocked over many of the men who were carrying the ladders) however I did not stand on much ceremony. I took a leap right into the ditch and was scrambling up the other side (the parapet) when I saw a Capt'n of the 97th struggling with and cutting down some Russians with his Sword. I immediately made towards him to assist him when suddenly he made a rush through an embrasure and went in. I went in after him followed by some of the 90th but just as I got into an Embrasure I was knocked over by a ball which hit me on the neck. I soon recovered, ran round a Tranesd[?] and the first thing which caught my eye was a Russian Officer struggling with a Sergeant. I immediately laid hold of him and as I had a Flintlock Bayonet in my hand he gave in at once - I told him in French that he was my prisoner and ordered the Sergeant to march him to the Rear - My attention was then drawn to a new Cannon which I tried to Spike by breaking the point of my Sword in it which I did not succeed in doing. I then tried to break the point of a Bayonet in it but failed to do so also.
