[Copy of letter written to Mrs Maclaren in Scotland]

Royal Barracks
Dublin
30th May 1854

My dear Mrs MacLaren

I would write to you but there is really so little news here that one feels some difficulty in making up a respectable letter. I think we are pretty sure to remain here for some months yet as it is not likely they will send any more troops to Turkey or the Baltic this year. There was a report that more Regts were to be ordered to the heat of war however it has turned out to be false & my opinion is that by this time next year we shall be on our passage to India. I saw from the Gazette some time ago that B. Hyndman was appointed to the 3rd Regiment. His Grandmother must give him a good allowance to keep up with the 3rd as they are rather extravagant. The appearance of the 90th is completely changed since we were allowed to wear "Moustaches". I was sorry to hear of Major Todd's dearth, he appeared a healthy old man. Is the mighty George Corsan[?] still alive? He must be getting rather venerable now. He has to answer for the death of many a little Boy. Are the Irvine Ladies still as zealous in good works as formerly. I wish we had some of them here, to visit the Hospital as I don't find it the most agreeable part of my duty, especially when Fever & Cholera are prevalent. I suppose your Garden is in perfect order at present. I wish I could get at the Gooseberries. Capt. Francis must be drawing near home by this time, I sincerely hope he has had a prosperous voyage.

Compts to Ann and I remain my dear Mrs McLaren
Yours very sincerely

N. Grahame
