1st May 1854

My dear Uncle

I am now quartered with the 90th Perthshire Light-Infantry in Ship Street Barracks Dublin.

The 90th are as fine a looking corps as is in the service[.] they are all Perthshire men and a great many Grahams amongst them. The grenadiers are all six feet high & some of them six feet three & a half. No man in this Regiment is taken on under five feet ten. There is one Grahame in the Regt who is the strongest man in Dublin. He killed five men at Waterloo with his own hand & took two standards. In fact they are all a fine set of men as you would wish to look at. It is supposed we will go [sic] Turkey where I am sure of promotion. I see from the papers that the English fleet has already set to work having taken several Russian ships. I should like to hear from you soon. I am drilled four hours a day & have to attend all court martials parades &c.

There is very little news here[.] hoping to hear from you soon I remain your very affectionate nephew
