Columbia 12 Inch Charity Square

In memory of all those that lost loved ones, or were touched by the Columbia disaster... Feb. 1, 2003

Finished Size: approx. 12" square
Crochet Hook: Size I/5.5mm
Supplies: WW Yarn: For US square: red (true red, no burgundy), white (no soft white) and blue (royal blue or soft navy).
For Israel square: blue and white (no soft white)
Gauge: First two rounds measure 2�" across.

Stitches and Abbreviations Used:
Sp: space
Yo: yarn over
Ch: chain
Sl st: slip stitch
Dc: double crochet
Fptr: front post treble/triple crochet

Special Stitches:
Fptr {front post treble crochet}: Yo hook 2 times, insert hook from front to back around post of st, yo and pull up loop, (yo and draw through 2 loops on hook) 3 times.

Note: The colours listed above are the exact colours for use in the Columbia Disaster Afghans for HeartMade Blessings. If you are using this pattern for a different purpose, feel free to use different colours.

Foundation: With red for US or blue for Israel, ch 4, join with sl st to form ring.
Round 1: Ch 3, 2 dc in ring, ch 2, (3 dc, ch 2) 2 times, 3 dc in ring, ch 1, sc in top of beg ch 3 to join. [12 dc, 4 sps]
Round 2: Ch 3, dc in same sp, (* dc in each st across, in corner work 2 dc, * ch 2, 2 dc) 3 times, then work from * to * once, ch 1, sc in top of beg ch 3 to join. [28 dc, 4 sps]
Round 3: Repeat round 2. [44 dc, 4 sps]
Round 4: Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining, (* dc in each st across, in corner work 2 dc, * ch 2, 2 dc) 3 times, then work from * to * once, ch 2. Join with sl st to top of beg ch 3 to join. Finish off yarn. [60 dc, 4 sps]
Round 5: With white, join yarn with sl st in any ch 2 sp. Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining, (* dc in next 3 sts, fptr in next 2 sts, dc in next st, fptr in next 3 sts, dc in next st, fptr in next 2 sts, dc in next 3 sts, in corner work 2 dc, * ch 2, 2 dc) 3 times, then work from * to * once, ch 1. Join with sc to top of beg ch 3. [28 fptr, 48 dc, 4 sps]
Round 6: Repeat round 2. [92 dc, 4 sps]
Round 7: Repeat round 4. [108 dc, 4 sps]
Round 8: With blue, join yarn with sl st in any ch 2 sp. Ch 3, dc in same sp as joining, (* dc in next 3 sts, fptr in next st, dc in next st, fptr in next 4 sts, dc in next 2 sts, fptr in next st, dc in next 3 sts, fptr in next st, dc in next 2 sts, fptr in next 4 sts, dc in next st, fptr in next st, dc in next 3 sts, in corner work 2 dc, * ch 2, 2 dc) 3 times, then work from * to * once, ch 1, sc in top of beg ch 3 to join. [48 fptr, 76 dc, 4 sps]
Round 9: Repeat round 2. [140 dc, 4 sps]
Round 10: Repeat round 2. [156 dc, 4 sps]
Round 11: Repeat round 4. [172 dc, 4 sps]
Weave in all ends and hand block to measure 12".
