Government

In the year 1946, Italy's government had changed from being a monarchy to a republic which rather than ruled by a king would be headed by a president. A constitution had been passed in 1947 and began January 1, 1948.

After this constitution a government had been set up which included the president, the Council of Ministers, and a Parliament. The president is in office and elected to serve a seven year term. In Italy the president must be at least 50 years old and they can control the Parliament and get a new one and there isn't such thing as a vice president. If something happens to the president, the Senate will then take over, however if he dies a new election will be held. In this country, the prime minister is the most important person. The prime minister is picked by the president and then he picks the members of the cabinet.

The parliament consists of the Chamber of Deputies and Senate are the Parliament. The chamber of Deputies is 630 members elected by voters from 27 districts. The senate has 315 members elected by voters and other members are picked by the president who are able to stay there for life. Previous presidnts are also life members and both the chamber and the senate have equal power. This power allows them to pass laws and they are there to serve for five years. Judges of courts are appointed during service exams and the president of the Parliament picks five from the constitution court and another five judges are picked by other courts. The last part of government is included in the armed forces. If you are a man and 17 years old you have to go to the army. You can either go to the air force for 12 months or you can go to the navy for 16 months.
