(Chapter 1-2) |
The story begins with two boys, Ralph and Piggy, meeting each other on an abandoned island's |
beach. They were on a plane with a group of boys from their all boys private school in England. The pilot of the |
planeis gone and there aren't and grown-ups on the island. |
Ralph and Piggy bathe in a lagoon then begin to wonder where the rest of the boys went. They find a |
conch and Ralph blows into. All the boys begin to appear. The boys agree that there has to be a vote for a |
leader. Ralph wins the vote so he is the leader. Ralph assigns a boy named Jack to be the head of |
hunters. |
Ralph, Jack and another boy named Simon decided to explore the island while the others waited on |
thebeach. The boys walk for a long time until they reach the end of the island. They then have to walk through a |
jungle to reach the mountain ahead of them. They move towards the top of the mountain, pushing a huge rock |
over the edge of the cliff. |
The view from the top of the mountain confirms that no one lives on the island. |
On their way back to where the rest of the boys are they find a pig. Jack goes to kill it but he fells bad so |
he lets it run away. The boys finally get back to where the boys are.Ralph calls another meeting by blowing in |
the conch. When everyone has gathered Ralph tells the groupabout their exploration and how the island is |
deserted. He tells them that they need to make some rules. Thefirst rule is that who ever s holding the conch is |
able to speak. |
Piggy tries to worn the boys about their situation but all the boys ignore him. They are all paying |
attentionto a boy who say's he is seeing beasts ( a snake like thing). Ralph tells him it was probably just a dream butsome of the boys begin to get scared. |
The boys decide to make a fire on top of the mountain so that air planes will be able to tell people |
are onthe island. They gather sticks to make the fire and steal Piggy's glasses to light it. The fire grows until it |
is onthe whole mountain top. Once the fire has died down there is another meeting where the boys decide that |
thehunters will be in charge in keeping the fire going. Piggy notices that one of the boys has gone missing and |
some of the boys are afraid that he dies in the fire. |

Summary #2 |
(Chapter 3-4) |
This section begins with Jack alone in the jungle hunting for pigs. Jack sees a pig but it escapes |
beforehe can catch it. Jack finally returns to the beach where he find Ralph trying to build some shelters. Ralph |
is veryfrustrated because the huts keep falling apart. None of the other children are much help to Ralph except |
Simon. Ralph is complaining to Jack that at all the meetings lots of people have good ideas but the ideas |
never go anywhere. Simon and Ralph are both worried that the boys are afraid of the beasts but Jack is to |
busy thinking about pigs to respond. |
Ralph and Jack get into a fight over which is more important, shelter or food. They both explain their |
pointof view but still disagree from one another. They decide to settle down by going for a swim in the lagoon. |
Aftertheir swim Jack continues to hunt and Ralph continues build. Meanwhile Simon starts to walk off into the |
jungle. He finds a very nice clearing in the jungle and sits down letting all the nature surround him. |
The boys are getting used to living on the island. They often sleep in the shade of the trees huddling |
together to keep each other safe and not so fearful. The youngest boys pretty much live on their own. They |
come when meetings are called but usually stay out of the older boy's businesses. Unfortunately Jack and the |
boys he leads always bully the younger boys. This isn't the only problem on the island. Some of the children are |
eating fruit which is making them sick. The other boys are always crying and refusing to eat. |
Jack and the other hunters paint their face and go out to hunt once again. The other boys swim and |
relaxin the lagoon. Ralph notices a boat not far away. As all the boys run to the top of the mountain they notice |
thatthe hunters have let the fire burn out. Then the hunters arrive at the seen carrying a dead pig. The hunters |
describe the killing to the boys. Ralph and Piggy accuse the hunters of letting the fire burn out and ruin any |
chance of being saved. Jack hits Piggy breaking his glasses. Ralph yells at Jack and Jack apologizes for the |
fire but not for hitting Piggy. |
Piggy's glasses are used to restart the fire. The boys roast the pig and feast on it. Jack refuses to |
givePiggy some so Simon shares his piece with Piggy. All the boys start dancing and singing but Ralph |
interruptsby calling a meeting. Ralph then walked down to the beach alone. |
