Takayama | |||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||
Hida Folk village, where old-style Japanese farmhouses have been taken and restored. The steep roofs are a defence against snow and are known as "gassho-zukuri" which means they are thought to look like hands in prayer. On the left is the inside of a roof, tied with vines and rope, where silkworms were farmed. On the right, a traditional "irori" fireplace in the floor of a farmhouse.
Left, streets in the old town area of Takayama, with traditional sake shops. Right, a tree in the grounds of a temple, said to be 1200 years old! |

The "lion dance" which paraded around and did a dance at all the businesses in the area to bring good luck. We saw it at the Folk Village.
