Takayama
Hida Folk village, where old-style Japanese farmhouses have been taken and restored. The steep roofs are a defence against snow and are known as "gassho-zukuri" which means they are thought to look like hands in prayer. On the left is the inside of a roof, tied with vines and rope, where silkworms were farmed. On the right, a traditional "irori" fireplace in the floor of a farmhouse.
Left, streets in the old town area of Takayama, with traditional sake shops.

Right, a tree in the grounds of a temple, said to be 1200 years old!
Adults and children parading the mikoshi (portable shrine) around the town's businesses and homes to bring good fortune
Children wearing happi coats and kimono to celebrate the festival.
Special festival lanterns decorating the shops of the old town area.
The "lion dance" which paraded around and did a dance at all the businesses in the area to bring good luck. We saw it at the Folk Village.
