Community CCTV cuts crime
- The introduction of a CCTV scheme to a Shropshire town has slashed crime levels states The Shropshire Star.
Oswestry had one of the highest levels of crime against businesses in the country and criminal damage and town centre violence was above the national average.
Now, thanks to CCTV cameras and community volunteers Oswestry is a described as a "different place."
Almost 40 volunteers ranging in age from 19 to 82, give up four hours or more a week to man the cameras. All have had training to use the system as well as in related including data protection and human rights.
Project coordinator Amanda Bright said bringing the CCTV cameras to Oswestry had been a true community project.
The scheme was twice turned down for Home Office funding but Oswestry Town Council finally offered to contribute £112,000 to pay for the first 11 cameras.
Additionally local firms and organisations gave materials and services to build the control room at the police station and in June 2001 the cameras went live.
A year later the system was expanded with Oswestry Borough Council and other funding paying for 10 new cameras at the town's bus station and Gobowen Railway Station.
"Before the CCTV cameras there were 12 break-ins a week on cars at the railway station. Today there are almost none. One a fortnight ago was seen on camera and police were there within minutes," Amanda Bright said.WESTRY
