NORAD NEWS
The only real relationship between NORAD and NATO is that both the
United States and Canada, the two nations comprising NORAD, are also
members of NATO.
NORAD's mission is to defend North America against an attack from the
air or space. NATO's mission is much broader. You may be aware that the
NATO charter stipulates that an attack against one member nation is
considered an attack against all countries in the alliance. For
approximately six months after the terrorist attacks in the United
States, NATO sent several aircraft assigned to the alliance in Europe
to the United States to assist with airborne radar surveillance. Those
planes redeployed to Europe in the spring of 2002.
