Category: D/J, minor angst, mention of S/J... I don't
think this counts as character death, does it? I hope
not. I swore I'd never write character death.
Spoilers: Meridian, Ascension
Season/Sequel info: Set sometime after 'Meridian'. You
should probably have some knowledge of 'Ascension', too.
Rating: G
Archive: Anywhere, just let me know.
Content Warnings: None.
Summary: Daniel's back for a visit.

Disclaimer: If I owned the characters, I wouldn't have
to write the fic, would I? But, just in case you haven't
read this a billion times before- they're owned by
Gekko, Double Secret Productions, Showtime, and MGM.

Author's notes: This is my attempt at happy Meridian fic.
Oxymoron? Probably. But I had to do *something* to cheer
myself up. Feedback would be much appreciated.

*Don't you dare.* Janet tried desperately to send a
silent message to the figure standing behind General
Hammond without drawing attention to herself.

No-one had given him a glance when he'd come in, despite
the fact that he'd entered through a wall. That was a
bad sign. It usually meant he'd made himself invisible
to everyone but her, and that always meant trouble.

"...so we can ask Danny to scope the place out..." the
Colonel was saying as the ascended archaeologist
wandered into the middle of the briefing room table.

*Daniel...* She implored him silently to go away,
knowing from experience that it would have no effect
whatsoever.

Janet clamped a hand over her mouth, trying to look as
casual as possible as Daniel stood mimicking Jack,
pausing every now and then to send overly exaggerated
adoring gazes across the table at Sam.

*I will not laugh. I will not laugh. I will not laugh...*
Janet repeated the mantra to herself as she tried to
look anywhere but at Daniel. One of his favourite
pastimes these days was making fun of Jack and Sam,
since he was the one who'd discovered their secret
relationship in the first place. Apparently becoming
invisible had more advantages than just being able to
spy on the Goa'uld.

Finally leaving the Colonel alone, Daniel moved over to
General Hammond, waving a hand in front of his face and
snapping his fingers as if to wake him up. She had to
admit, the General did look bored.

Biting her tongue to keep from laughing, Janet studied
her notes carefully, making a point of ignoring him as
he came to stand beside her.

"Miss me?" He asked into her ear, whispering even though
no-one else could hear him.

~Always.~ She wrote in her notebook, pretending to take
notes on the briefing. Inwardly she sighed. She had
missed him. While his ascension had obvious strategic
benefits, and she knew he was doing a lot of good with
Oma, his visits lately had been few and far between.

"Sorry I stayed away so long," he told her, "things have
been busy lately."

~It's okay,~ she wrote, ~I understand. I'm glad you're
here now. How long can you stay?~

"I don't know. Jack wants me to spy on some Goa'uld
operated Naquadah mining camp tomorrow, but after that
I'm not sure. I'll stay as long as I can."

~I really miss you.~

"I know, I miss you too. I wish I could touch you. I
will, one day. But right now the things I'm doing are
important, and once I take solid form I can't go back.
But if it were just my life I would. You know that,
right?"

She sighed again. ~I know. I love you.~

He moved a hand to her face, and although she couldn't
physically feel it, she fought the urge to close her
eyes at the imaginary sensation. "I love you too," he
whispered sincerely.

"Doctor?" Snapping back to the briefing, Janet realised
that General Hammond was addressing her. Everyone was
getting up to leave, and she guessed that the briefing
was over.

"Er, sorry, I was..." Daniel grinned at her, almost
daring her to tell the truth. "distracted," she finished,
closing her notebook quickly.

"Are you sure you're okay Doctor?"

"I'm fine." She nodded quickly, sending Daniel a quick
glare as she gathered her notes.

Walking briskly through the corridors of the SGC, Janet
idly wondered what she wanted to do more- to kiss him or
hit him. She glared at him again, and he laughed.

"I swear Daniel," she hissed, though she couldn't quite
keep the smile off her face, "if it were possible to
kill you right now..."

"Well," he replied, "technically, I'm already dead. At
least officially."

"Yeah, well, if you ever take solid form again, you
better watch it," she threatened, noticing for the first
time the looks she was getting from other SGC personnel.
"And can you make yourself visible please?" She added,
"everyone thinks I'm nuts."

"You are."

"Shut up."

Entering the infirmary, Janet rolled her eyes as Daniel
walked through the closed door of her office. Joining
him, she sat behind her desk, watching as he wandered
thoughtfully around the room.

"What is it?" She asked, contentment and longing both
evident in her gaze as she looked at him.

"I want to show you something," he answered.

"New trick?" She asked, raising an eyebrow.

He shrugged, coming to stand beside her. "Sort of. Close
your eyes."

She did as asked, wondering what he was doing.

"Now just relax."

She breathed deeply, feeling a warmth spread through her.
White light engulfed her, filling the small room with a
radiant glow. And then she felt him. Not physically, but
this was better. She felt everything that was Daniel
suddenly coursing through her veins, it was as though his
entire being had joined with hers. Their spirits
entwined, she felt everything, his love for her warming
her to the very core. It was indescribable.

The light faded, leaving a warm feeling of contentment
in it's wake. She opened her eyes, tears spilling over
onto her cheeks as she opened her mouth to speak.
"Daniel..."

"Shh," he countered, "it's okay." He leaned down so he
could look into her eyes, wanting more than anything to
touch her. "Maybe not right now, but I am coming back.
To you. Okay?"

She nodded, her face lighting into a brilliant smile.
"Okay."
