| DIRECTED BY: Stuart Gordon STARRING: Jeffrey Combs, Bruce Abbott Combs plays Herbert West, a scientist who invents re-agent, a fluid, which can bring dead bodies back to life. Released in 1985, the same year as Romeros Day of the Dead, Re-Animator was a breakthrough film, and shocked the mainly conservative cinema audiences of its time. Re-animator is Frankenstein for the 80s with barrels of humour and gore. The main character, Herbert, is totally void of any sense of remorse or a conscience and is more like the monster than those he creates. Herbert, a science student, moves in with his fellow student Dan Cain, played by Bruce Abbott, and his girlfriend played by Barbara Crampton. But they soon notice that Herbert locking himself in his room most of the time conducting strange experiments is far from normal. But what eventually arouses their suspicion is the discovery of their dead and flattened cat in their fridge, Herbert explains how he was preserving it for burial, but they dont believe him. The cat is eventually revived and Herbert is kicked out of his science course due his increasingly erratic behaviour. Despite this, he moves his experiments to the basement where he proceeds to use the re-agent on body parts and humans. Dan eventually finds out and is brought into the sick scheme. This is a classic of the horror genre and one for the personal vault, watch it, watch it, and watch it! And if you do, find the uncut version, because this is the version you want to watch. |
| Re-Animator 1985 From the pen of H.P. Lovecraft, this gory tale centers around the unholy experiments of Swiss scientist, Herbert West who has discovered how to bring the dead back to life. After the death of his professor, West moves to another University to continue his research. Involving fellow student, Dan Cain and his fiancee, Megan Halsey, he experiments at first on a dead cat. Dan, who is impressed by the results, agrees to smuggle West into the hospital morgue where West has access to many cadavers and body parts, and of course, the rest is history! Quotes: Who's going to believe a talking head? Get a job in a sideshow. What if we get caught? What'll they do? Embalm us? Don't expect it to tango; it has a broken back. I must say, Dr. Hill, I'm VERY disappointed in you. You steal the secret of life and death, and here you are trysting with a bubble-headed coed. You're not even a second-rate scientist!
