Chapter 3
After the moving truck was loaded, Britt boarded an airplane headed for Austin, Texas. She took a shuttle to her new home, a condo she had found on the University of Texas website. She would be moving in with a girl whose former roommate had graduated. As the shuttle approached the condo, the nervous feeling left her stomach. The neighborhood had a friendly, young appeal, lots of people that appeared to be her age jogging. Upon stopping, Britt got out of the shuttle and approached the front door with her roller bag. Not knowing if she should knock or use the key that was sent to her, she decided to ring the doorbell. After hearing yells and a dog barking inside, the front door opened in a frenzy and she was facing a pretty brunette girl. As the girl held the small dog she said, “Britt Meyer, right?”
“Yeah, I’m Britt,” she answered, laughing as she watched the girl struggle with the little dog.
“Well shit girl, get in here,” the girl said as she moved out of the way, “I’m Jordan Alexander and this precious little boy is Willie.”
“Well hi Willie,” Britt greeted as she pet the dog. “WOW! This place is bigger than I expected it to be.”
“It looks really big now, especially since Des left.”
“Des? Oh, your old roommate.”
“Yeah, I was hoping you would come with furniture.”
“It’s on the way...I flew in from Tampa and the movers are coming in the morning.”
“Cool - so, no car?” Jordan asked.
“No, that is coming tomorrow too. My boyfriend bought me a new one for graduation and it is being delivered.”
“Your boyfriend bought you a car? Are you serious?” Jordan asked, shock apparent in her voice.
“Yeah,” Britt answered calmly, making it seem normal.
“What kind of car is it?”
“Oh, some kind of sport utility...I think it is a BMW or something...”
“Or something? Holy shit, you mean to tell me that your boyfriend bought you a brand new BMW sport utility? What color is it?”
“Black...I think the interior of it is gray...I have only driven it once, when he took me to see it at the dealership. I have just been using my other car this summer.”
“Other car...and what kind of car is it...and, did he buy you this one too?”
“Oh no, my parents...its just a Prelude...”
“So only the new one is coming right?”
“Yeah, Nicky said that I should bring the new one here because it is safer. He is funny, he loves cars and thinks that all girl should have an SUV b/c they are dangerous drivers.”
“Sounds like I need a boy that thinks like Nicky,” Jordan said. “Anyways, let’s get you settled in. Let me show you the place.”
