Chapter 15

It was now Friday. Nick sat in his hotel room in Las Vegas, still stewing over the fact that Britt wasn’t coming today. He had barely said a word to anyone. He had performed as expected, but other than that he had been keeping to himself. He couldn’t believe that she flaked out on him, especially Halloween. And to add insult to injury, all of the guys would have someone with them. All of the other wives and girlfriends would be there, as they all were most of the time. Nick was starting to think that Britt was making a fool of him. He knew that Brian and Leighanne understood, because they were close to him and Britt both separately and as a couple, but the others had trouble seeing why Britt wouldn’t want to be with Nick. Some, especially Kristin and Howie, had even thought that the two were having problems and on the verge of a break up. Sure they were having problems, but Nick hadn’t seen it so bad that a parting of ways was coming. He loved Britt, that was one of the only things he was sure of. But he was hurting because she had rejected him once again. Hearing a soft knock on the door, Nick got up from his pouting spot on the bed and went to the door.

“Hey Brian, Leigh...come on in,” Nick replied as he let his two friends in. He walked over the mess that had accumulated over the past day and fell into a chair.

Struggling to find a place to sit, Brian and Leighanne took a seat on the sofa facing Nick, sitting atop various articles of clothing. “I figured that you would be getting this place picked up, what time is Britt coming in today?” Leighanne asked.

Nick chuckled sarcastically. Brian asked quizically, puzzled by Nick‘s response, “She is coming today, yall have had the reservations for a couple of weeks now, right?”

“Uh huh, sure have, but ya see, Britt doesn’t seem to see it that way. She’s not coming.”

Shock was apparent on both of their faces. “Why isn’t she coming? When did she tell you?” Leighanne asked, concern obvious.

Suprising calm, almost jokingly, he simply stated, “She would rather go to Dallas with her roommate and she told me yesterday.”

“That isn’t like Britt,” Brian said, “She would never wait until the last minute to tell you that. I don’t understand that.”

“I don’t know what Britt is like anymore, I try to fool myself into thinking that she is the same person that she was but she isn’t,” Nick said harshly before taking a softer tone, “I don’t understand it either but there isn’t anything I can do about it. The funny thing is, she didn’t even try to explain, she just told me that she wanted to do it. When I tried to tell her I wanted her here, she took the hard line and told me she was going to Dallas, period.”

“Do you want me to try to talk to her, I mean, maybe something is up. She is one of my best friends and she would tell me if something was up,” Leighanne hopefully said.

“Don’t bother, it is pointless. I have been trying to analyze this since I hung up on her yesterday, but you know what...I am sick of it. If Britt wants back out on me on the last minute, that is her deal. Honestly, I am to the point where I don’t really care what she does this weekend...I will have my fun, her not being here isn’t going to ruin my time,” Nick said sternly.

“Nick, you can’t just forget it, it just makes it worse. You should try to talk to her, or at least let Leigh see what is going on. You may feel better if-”

Nick cut Brian off, “NO...I told you, I am not going to let her take me up and down this roller coaster again. For once, I am going to do what she least expects me to do, absolutely nothing. She seems to think that I constantly overreact, well lets see how she deals with no reaction. I want to see what she does. But I for one am going to enjoy myself, just like I should have been doing this whole time. I am sick of pining away for her, she is on her own this weekend. As far as I am concerned, Britt can do what ever the fuck she wants, I am sick of it.”
