Just Friends? - Chapter 1

I woke up suddenly with an anxious feeling in my stomach, and looked at the clock. "7:00? If I wake up this early on Saturdays, I have no life whatsoever," I mumbled. I unwillingly stumbled out of bed, and it dawned on me why I was anxious...it was my birthday! I was turning 20. Oh, the reason I'm not in college or anything is because I was admitted early to Stanford and got my bachelor's degree in journalism when I was 19. I went down to the kitchen and noticed a note on the counter. It was written in my dad's scribbly, yet legible handwriting. It read:

Dear Felicia,
If you're reading this and I'm not here, then I'm at work. Some meeting. They called me at 5:00 in the morning for it, so I guess it was that important. Don't wait up for me for lunch, I'll be at the office until about 2:00. Yes, even considering it's a Saturday. And even considering it's your birthday! I'm very sorry. When I get home though, it'll be just you and me. But if you want to have dinner with a friend(hint hint), then that's fine. See you when I get home, and don't go get drunk on me! You still have one more year to wait until you can do that.
Daddy

I wondered what he meant by "hint hint", but I shrugged it off with a light chuckle. I got out a bowl and some milk and had my favorite cereal, Lucky Charms. At about 7:15, the phone rang. 'Who would be calling at this ungodly hour?' I thought. But, I answered it anyway, expecting it to be my dad. Boy, was I in for a big surprise.

"Hello?" I asked, still groggy from getting up so early.

"Hi, is Felicia there?" asked the other line. The voice sounded extremely and painfully familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on who it was.

"Umm, this is her."

"Uh, Felicia....this is Nick."
