The 378 experience, 290709

After a very long period of AC/DC testing these units finally entered passenger service today on an all day North London diagram. I flagged my usual 313 to join 378005 on the 1736 Richmond-Willesden this evening.

From the outside these units look smart, the livery sits well albeit on a 3 coach formation. On entering the first feeling is that you have joined a Boeing 757 or stretched MD DC8!! as there are no seperating doors between coaches just a long almost empty, spacious interior.

The seats, if your quick to get one, are very narrow and are sideways facing. This allows for 2 rows of standing passengers in between the bench seating. The air conditioning kills any traction motor noise. On rounding curves such as leaving Gunnesbury for Acton you get a bendy bus style view of the 3 coaches.

Very different yes, the 378’s will no doubt be able to move a lot of people despite only having 3 coaches at the moment. Personally I prefer the 313’s on my Richmond commute, utilitarian seating yes and sometimes horribly wedged, lets hope the 378 introduction to full service is a slow one…
