Meganisi is the
one Ionian island where time really does
seem to stand still. Reached by
ferry from Nidri, passing Skorpios, the contrast between the bustle of
that busy resort and the quiet solitude of Meganisi's lonely bays and
traffic free lanes couldn't be more marked. With just 3 or 4 villages,
hardly more than hamlets in reality and almost no tourist development,
this is the perfect island to escape from the stresses and strains of a
busy life. Even the entrance to Vathi, the island's only port is watched
over by twin churches to bless those arriving and leaving.
Katomeri, where the hotel is situated,
has a few tavernas where the chances are that a visitor will be offered a
glass of ouzo and a game of cards. The only other village on the main road
(a misnomer if ever there was one!) is Spartochori, an immaculate small
settlement of whitewashed houses half buried in a riot of bougainvillea
and jasmine, with outstanding views across to Lefkas and Skorpios.
The Hotel Meganisi, run by the charming
Dimitris and Christina Politis, with the help of their various sons and
daughters-in-law, complements the spirit of the island perfectly.
Attractively designed in traditional
style, the guest bedrooms are simple but comfortable. All have air
conditioning, en-suite showers and balconies with lovely views over the
surrounding countryside. A meal in the hotel dining room is always a
memorable occasion, with delicious local dishes lovingly prepared by
Christina.
Other tavernas can be found near the
quay in Vathi, just 1 km away, and the nearest beach is about 20 minutes
walk from the hotel. For those seeking to work up an appetite there is
wonderful walking throughout the island. For the truly energetic a
footpath, rough in places, extends down the middle of the narrow spine of
land to the southeast. It's a long way to Cape Kefali at the very tip of
the island, but turning back will always reveal wonderful new views and
fresh perspectives. Below the path the steep cliffs are honeycombed with
caves, only accessible by boat, some even large enough, so the story goes,
to hide submarines during WW2. Any aches and pains from the walk can be
soothed away in the hotel's swimming pool.
The hardest decision of a holiday at the
Hotel Meganisi might well be to leave in time for your return flight home!
