the Post-Human Era
Post-Human describes a time, sometime in the future, when genetic maniuplation has created a race that is truly no longer human. This is an interesting concept and one that is technically and viably concivable. Such an "era" could begin with simply genetic manipulation for parents to choose the gender of thier child, or less (egotistically - self centered), attempting to prevent a genetic abnormality prior to conception. In either case, though it may seem wise, sometimes one must let nature take hold. I would not doubt that in the very near future these and other more cosmetic changes will be allowed. It could just be me, but it seems less fun if you don't have to work for it (note: this can also be said for the "take a pill" generation that is developing).

Some possiblities of the future:
Genes that limit human body fat. Also, genes that maintain muscle mass. Both of these could give great looking human bodies, with little or no work.

Cosmetic "genetic" surgery: having genes manipulated, probably first before birth, then later as technology develops at ones own choice.

Something to remember. Toying with genes may seem like a good idea, but we have not developed a great enough knowledge of the human body to begin to imploy any of our minicule understanding in the extremely complex work of genetic manipulations. Many of the bodies functions are not single gene manipulations, but groups of genes working together to produce an end result. If we manipulate one, it may throw the complete system out of balance ( note: read Kevin Kelly's
Out of Control, especially the chapter that describes the prarie).

I think we should work for what we get and try to take things in stride. The technologies we have developed, espically medical, are of use and probably should be used; however, we need to remember that with that we need to take care and pay attention to how far we are going on these exploits. Sometimes we need to suffer to get stronger (immune system) and not suffering at all, in turn, makes us weaker. [this can also be applied emotionally, think of the great martial artist who has never had to injure someone. If they are pressed, they may fall to great emotional trauma if they use skilled fighting tactics which would cause great harm to another].

This may also create a war of dominance between the human and the post human civilizations. Similar things can happen over generations with colonizing planets. For an example of this happening, look to the past with the colonial wars between Britian and the United States.
