Comeaux Football
My freshman year of high school I played football. It was an interesting experience. I enjoyed the comradere' and the stigma that followed football; strong and/or tough (other sterotypes need not apply). Coming out of middle school and playing football my last year there, it seemed the logical choice. I had fun and met a number of people who I would continue to be friends with for quite some time.

Playing football as a freshman wasn't too bad. I hadn't lifted any more weights (strength training) than I had previously -- keep on same trend. Other players did the same. Most people took 4th hour "Athletic" PE. I asked my coaches to put me in it, but they never got around to it. (Note: this is a trend). Toward the end of the season some of the athelets became stronger which helped make the game more aggresive than I liked. The game became more aggresive and a number of atheletes soon became favorites and school stars. These players teneded to be quite aggresive and some even were considered head hunters... out to hurt other atheletes. This detered me from the game somewhat.

My heart quickly fell out of favor with the game. I played in a few junior varsity scrimmages and practices, but I found them too aggresive for me. I was tired of feeling 'beat up' and getting too many bruises for my taste. I would later get the same feelings in some hard rides and even with running. Loss of interest ended my football career.

While playing football there was a large drive to play 'favorites.' Others left due to this reason. If you weren't on their "good list" then you didn't play. Playing more players would have kept many solid players on the team. Picking favorites and molding them into better players and using the excuse that they are simply a better players isn't the best way to keep players. I was moved from one postion (tackle) to another (guard), then replaced by a player whose game ended at half time due to lack of endurance. At times he hit harder than I did, but I could maintain what I had for the whole game. This seemed to be a typical scenario throughout the team. Others could probably share similar stories.

My biggest gripe would have to be not recruiting people from the PE classes, as a number of great athletes slipped by them by not recruiting out of it. Also, being more supportive of atheletes would help.

Coach Washington was the freshman football coach and was for a year or so after that year, when he became assistant principle of the school.

Coach Johnson was the head football coach and led his team 0-10 season that year. I believe that was followed by a 3-7 season. To his credit, district play was in a tough league.

Coach Simon was the lineman coach. Though he didn't look it, he was still pretty darn strong.

Coach Langlinas was the ?? coach and would later coach baseball (partial?) and other coaching positions.

Coach Bolyes was the reviever coach.

Other coaches?

While on the sidelines I would sometimes see cross country running and would want to do that instead... a little foreshadowing....
