Silkies
Silkies might be my favorite breed of chicken.  They are unusual in that they don't have normal feathers; they have fluffy feathers!  This gives them the feel of a fluffy cat instead of a chicken.  Silkies come in a variety of colors including: White, Red, Buff, Blue, Black, Gray, Cuckoo, and Splash.

White Silkies
I used to raise White Silkies and had a gorgeous rooster named Jack Frost.  I no longer have any Whites, but I did have a favorite hen - a White Silkie named Cotton.  She was  my best broody hen and a wonderful mother.  Click here to see some pics of her doing what she does the best.
Red Silkies
Red Silkies are fairly rare.  As a matter of fact, I had to order 25 Red Silkies from Stromberg's hatchery in Minnesota!!!   My Red Silkies were actually Ginger Red which means that they had black tails and wingtips.   I love it when the sunlight hits their feathers; it is so bright!
Blue and Splash Silkies
These might be my favorite color of Silkie.  Although White is beautiful, it is impossible to keep them clean and pretty.  The darker colors look better longer.  I bought my original Blues in 2004 as chicks from Tractor Supply Company.  They had ordered them from Privett Hatchery.  I would really like to get some Show quality Blues, but they are expensive and I can't find any local.  I enjoyed raising Blues because every hatch brings a surprise: if 2 Blues are bred, they produce approximately 50% Blue, 25% Splash, and 25% Black chicks; Blue x Splash produce 50% Blues and 50% Splash; Splash x Splash produce 100% Splash.  I usually had a Blue rooster with 2 Splash hens or a Splash rooster with 2 Blue hens because I don't really care for Black Silkies as much.  I still have 1 Splash hen named Starr and 2 Blue hens named Skylar and Blackie - even though she's not Black (my 4 year old neice named her)
Buff Silkie
I've never raised Buff Silkies, but I do have Buff hen named Buttercup who is my best broody (since Cotton died.)  She is a very sweet and gentle girl; she lets us pick up her chicks without a fuss and she has raised several types of poultry; including Guinea keets and a duckling!
