Who am I ?

Me posing with my new hair for the camera

I’m a final year student doing Industrial Relations and Human Resource Management and I want to be YOUR WELFARE OFFICER. You might recognise me as one of the crazy JCC’ers that greeted you on your first day of uni or have seen me running around organising events.

I’ve been involved in the union since my first term at uni and want to carry on helping people get the most they can from their university experience. I founded the college of the year competition and have been internal officer, entertainments officer and, for the last year, secretary of EJCC. Earlier this year I was elected as an ordinary council member to represent your views. During my time on the JCC I have created a corridor rep system that means those living in halls have someone to contact on the JCC and helped out at many events including freshers weeks 2002 & 2003 and refreshers week 2004.
I have regularly attended the Union AGM's - even when there weren't free frosties! and am a CBS student ambassador.
I believe these experiences have allowed me to see where there is room for improvement within the union and I want to be given the chance to give something back .

A Better Students Union = A Better Student Experience !

Having listened to students I have selected some aims for my time as welfare officer if you vote me in. My main aim is for all the students at the University of Kent get the most they can from their time here and that their welfare is looked after whilst they are here.

Democracy on campus: I believe that every student should know they have a right to a voice. I want to give you the chance to decide what the union will stand for and what direction it goes in.

Improve the Car park system: Think it’s ridiculous to have three times as many parking permits than spaces? So do I! I aim to begin operating a mini-bus scheme to ease congestion in the car park.

Increasing communication with Students studying abroad or on years in industry Give more help in finding accommodation and keeping up to date with everything going on at the uni – including voting for the next year’s Sabbs!

Raise awareness of the issue of anti-social behaviour on campus. Set up an officer in every JCC and give more help to those suffering from any kind of discrimination.
Support foreign students. Currently there are no hardship funds for foreign students and the Home Office's recent introduction of charges to foreign nationals in the UK for visa’s means many foreign students are worse off than ever before.
Give prospective students more information and put more emphasis on open days to make the beginning of uni less scary.
Give students recognition and create a better image of students within Canterbury.
Work with the venue, student activities officer and entertainments on campus to create a wide variety of student nights that allow students to express themselves – from rock to reggae, space to star trek.
Continue working with the council and the police over bad landlords and housing problems

Vote Nicki Doherty for Welfare Sabb and give me a chance to show you what life at uni should really be like.
