The rain men

Torrential rain flooded out what could have been a very good first meeting of these two teams. A fairly impressive bollocking from Snarler Snelling during a rain break had the required result and the rejuvenated Gents took four quick wickets to reduce Plums to 75 for six. Snyman and Chris Folley were beginning to counter-attack before the rain returned, heavier this time, and drove the players off for good. This was the fourth game of the season affected by inclement weather. The result must forever remain a matter of speculation but the consensus among The Gents was that they would have successfully chased anything under 140. The unbeaten run was therefore extended to four games, albeit in unsatisfactory circumstances

On a damp pitch, Snarler did not hesitate to insert the visitors, who opened with the long-serving Jim Shea and Pieter Boa, an ex-Transvaal state player. He looked like he could bat too, off-driving Jimmy to the boundary in the second over. Then came the latest of Scibo’s sensational dismissals, "Feather" Boa executing a full-blooded pull-drive to mid-on where Mark took a fantastic catch. It might have then been two in two balls for young Golden Bollocks, all six feet two of him, as he appeared to take the edge of Thompson’s bat into the gloves of Master Beaumont. The batsman stayed put ("pad, mate"), the umpire was unmoved and everyone got on with things, the new batsman pulling Jim for four off the last ball of the over. Snarler bowled Shea next over before Thompson and the second Springbok, Snyman, began to play some pleasant shots. The latter took a brief shine to Sanjay, clearly troubled in his run by the wet footing, lofting him for three successive fours, although he was lucky to survive a drop by Jimmy over at long-off two overs later. Heavy drizzle then forced the players inside, though guest Jason Irvin opted for the Buck position under the trees by the railway line.

Snarler then administered a bollocking behind closed doors, his first of the season and most persuasive it was. It is an important, if this season underused part of a captain’s armoury. The Gents returned more voluble and their cricket edged up a notch or two as a result. The faster bowlers had not been that effective but Toddy coming up the hill was a different proposition. He bowled Thompson with the inswinger in his first over but was then pulled for six by Jackson, whom he then began to frustrate. A head-up heave soon got the desired result and when Lowdon was yorked the match was edging slowly towards the hosts. Sanjay then did for Lovelock – all three stumps awry – and it was party time. Toddy had a good shout for lbw declined by Thompson, who "couldn’t see." The same umpire, an intense personality, then applauded a quick single that would have been a run out by yards had Sanjay’s powerful throw hit.

Chris Folley was now at the crease and played well, seeing off Snarler’s last three overs, not without alarm but with a few fine shots thrown in. There was just time for guest Jason to bowl his first Gents’ over (and be blooded by Folley’s cover-drive and pull) when the rain became too intense to continue. One of the Plums’ wives had kindly supplied food for both teams and after a damp but pleasant tea-break the match was abandoned at 4pm.
