Home Road Bypass

Role Play

  • We support the widened A337 from Cadnam junction of M27 into Lyndhurst
  • Although some residents in Lyndhurst support the bypass, the dominate view is not of supporting a relief road because of first loss of land since establishment in 1079AD

An estimated:

850,000 tourists (75% camping or caravanning) and 8 million day trippers visit New Forest each year. According to 1986 statistics.

Origin of traffic

  • London to Bournemouth on M27 onto A31
  • Into New Forest from North on VERY CONGESTED A337 – sometimes queued back onto M27 junc.
  • From Southampton on A35 heading North

Major access points in New Forest

  • Lyndhurst – centrally located, focus for businesses and tourists, at nodes of most transportation links in the New Forest. Has experienced traffic congestion since the 1970’s.
  • Brockenhurst – Accessible via Lyndhurst only on A337
  • Beaulieu – South East from Lyndhurst on B3056

Problems with proposals:

Proposal (i) Southern Link Road:

3 roads need to be built, environmental damage, noise pollution and loss of forest

      - B3056 to A337 cuts through Pondhead Enclosure

      - A337 to A35 causes disruption to Foxlease and Bank

      - A35 to A337: Obstruction from Lyndhurst Hill

Noise pollution through Northerwood, Custards and Pikeshill

Proposal (ii) Northern Link Road:

-           A35 Dunces Arch to A337 Pikeshillno objections, minimal disruption to residents and environment.

-           A337 nr Pikeshill to A35 nr Bank – topography difficulties in placing road, along with disruption through Northerwood, Custards and Pikeshill

Extensions to proposal (ii):

a)      A35 nr Bank to A337 nr Foxlease – disruption in Bank and Foxlease, loss of forest nr High Coxlease

b)      A35 Dunces Arch to A337 nr Foxleaseno objections, minimal disruption

Due to the pressures of traffic:

-           congestion in Lyndhurst

-           longer travel times

-           less attractive area                A solution is needed

+          Minimal loss of forest land

Minimal disruption to Residents in and around Lyndhurst

-           Access to Christchurch via Bank on A35

Access to Beaulieu – possible intersection with Extension (b)

Although any proposed ‘bypass’ will incur on forest land, the needs of the residents in Lyndhurst; the largest settlement and modern movement via cars and coaches sees the ‘bypass’ as becoming a necessity for the sanity and safety of residents in Lyndhurst.
