Social Anxiety
                            What is social anxiety?


                            
Social anxiety disorder is a prestitant fear and avoidance of social situations. It affects about 8% of the population, which makes it the third largest mental health disorder. Social anxiety was the last anxiety disorder to be discovered, and is the least understood. People who have social anxiety may suffer from the following:

~ Fear of being the center of attention.
~ Fear of being judged by others.
~ Speaking in front of people, whether it be big crowds
or a small group of people.
~ Anxious when introduced to new people.
~ Fear of being in a unfamiliar social situation.
~ Fear of eating, drinking, using the restroom in public.
~ Uncomfortable around members of the oppisite sex.
~ Easily embarrassed and very insecure.
~ Go out of your way to avoid a social situation.


People who have social anxiety may have the following symptoms while in these situations:

~ Sweating
~ Heart racing
~ Panic attacks or feelings simular to a panic attack.
~ Shyness
~ Weekness in the knees
~ Blushing
~ Shaking, trembling
~ Dry mouth
~ And of course, extreme anxiety.


                Treatment for social anxiety includes, cognitive behavioral therapy, Benzadiazepines, and anti-depressants. Paxil is one of the most prescribed medications prescribed for social anxiety. With treatment about 90% of patients experiance a reduction on symptoms.
