| Later, when Maria was conscious again, Duncan as at her side. "Duncan," Maria said through tears. "Your going to be just fine, Macleod said, holding her hand. "Don't lie to me Duncan." Maria said. "Tell me the truth. It's bad, isn't it?" Duncan choked back tears, and shook his head. "I love you Duncan." Maria said. Duncan brushed his hand against her cheek, and kissed her gently on the lips. There was a knock on the door, it was the doctor. "Father Juan is here, Maria." The doctor said. "Send him in." Maria said. Father Juan gave Maria the sacraments, and when he was done, Duncan came back inside the room, along with Anita. They kept vigil with her through the night, until she worsened, and it was obvious that she was going to die. "Duncan," Maria said. "I'm here." Duncan said as he took her hand. It's going to be alright. "I know." She said. "I'm not afraid anymore." In that moment she died. Father Juan crossed himself, and Anita wept. Duncan was in a daze. He stayed at her side, holding her for a long time. Macleod had just been robbed of the love of his life, and he vowed to avenge her. |
