In part III of his autobiography, Franklin speaks of loaning money to the army and remarks: “As to my Balance, I am not paid it to this Day, of which more Hereafter” (140).
Franklin advanced money for privisions to the army and was promised that he would be paid back however this sentence indicates that he was never reimbursed.
In his essay Ben Franklin, D. H. Lawrence dares society “to educate me or to suppress me, according to your dummy standards” (289).
D. H. Lawrence expresses dissatisfaction with educational standards because they seem to have a motive.
Sayre states in his essay Worldly Franklin and Provincial Critics, anyone who studies Franklin’s biography must remember that it was written in four pieces each piece taking on the characteristics of where and when it was written down (316).
Sayre argues that too many people try to take the autobiography as one work instead of four works put together.
Worked harder than the others
High School Seniors should be required to read Franklin’s Autobiography as it gives emphasis and a model for self-industry and self-improvement.
