In February 2007, Genesius Theatre produced a tribute to Reading theatre legend Jane Simmon Miller, the original founder of Genesius Theatre in 1971. Thirty-six years later, Michael O'Flaherty , a co-founder of the theater, and LJ Fecho one of the original Genesius kids, and the theater's current artistic director, collaborated to produce a musical that would serve as a tribute to Jane Simmon Miller and the historic beginnings of Genesius Theatre. It was called Genesius, The Musical.
Mr. Fecho wrote the book and Mr. O'Flaherty wrote the music and lyrics for the show that became a smashing success, loved by not only past and present Genesius actors, but by the community, sponsors and other professionals in the performing arts community. One year after Genesius, The Musical appeared on the Berks County stage, it played again, this time directed by William Sanders and with a new cast and some slight alterations, at the renowned Goodspeed Opera House in East Haddam, Connecticut.
The Goodspeed performance took Genesius, The Musical one step closer to the dream that all at Genesius Theatre have for it, a New York audience. And that is where we are bound. Messrs. Fecho, O'Flaherty, and Sanders, along with the Genesius board of directors, have decided to produce an Actors Equity, Union Approved Showcase Fundraiser in New York with the goal of attracting producers who might get excited enough to bring our show to commercial success on the New York stage. To accomplish this, we need everyone's help. Producing a show in New York is expensive - a monumental financial undertaking that includes costs for theater rentals, rehearsal space rental, artistic stipends, technical needs, costumes, sets -and the list doesn't end.
