wouldn't it be nice if instead of warring nations and factions the world was united under a single government? well i think it'd be nice. i don't know if this makes me sound like a communist or some other random thing (with bad connotations of course). but really, standards are good. and wouldn't the world progress, both socially and technologically, much faster if humanity was working together instead of bickering over cultural issues? i mean most science fiction books looking towards the future see humankind working together to get 'big' stuff accomplished. sure there can still culture, but a single language and similar mannerisms would be nice. i think it is really just personal pride that is keeping the world from adopting a common language. the benefits of being able to communicate with a single language anywhere in the world is very appealing. the cultural loss is outweighed by the benefits of such standardization. there wouldn't be any miscommunications. information would be more accessible by all. there would only have to be a single printing of information and then everyone could read and understand that document, freeing up countless hours otherwise spent translating the same information just to make it more accessible. so with a greater exchange of knowledge, the world as a whole and humanity as a whole could advance together more quickly. sure, right now there are international organizations that bring countries together to pool their resources to get some 'big' things accomplished. but how much have they really accomplished? even when trying to do something that is beneficial, like reducing green house gas emissions (not that i truly believe in global warming, it's just an example), countries bicker because some are given special assistance that they need. the united states refuses to join such a pact to lower emissions because other countries don't have to lower emissions as much as it does. so what does this international pact become? a group of countries with little influence that will probably not get their goals accomplished. under a single government, it would just be mandated and it would be. same thing with space travel, think how much faster we would have landed on the moon if russian and american scientists collaborated instead of them being counterproductive and having to duplicate each others work. so yeah, i don't know how a government could be instated over the whole world. but i do believe that a change in that direction would be necessary in order for humankind to reach its full potential as a united entity. |
