Fresh Apple Cake

Cake

1 cup sugar
1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/2 cup shortening
2 tsp baking soda
1 cup buttermilk
2 eggs beaten
2 1/4 cup flour
1/2 tsp nutmeg
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/4 tsp cloves
1/4 tsp salt
2 cups peeled chopped apples

Topping

1/2 cup chopped nuts
1/4 cup sugar
1/4 cup firmly packed brown sugar
1/8 tsp cinnamon

Heat oven to 350* Grease and lightly flour a 13x9 inch pan
in a large bowl blend 1 cup sugar, 1/2 cup brown sugar and shortening.
Dissolve soda in buttermilk and stir into shortening mixture.
Lightly spoon flour into measuring cup and level off.
Add remainging cake ingredients except apples and beat well
Fold in apples and pour into prepared pan.

In a small bowl combine topping ingredients, sprinkle over batter in pan.
Bake at 350* for 35 to 45 minutes or until toothpick inserted in center comes out clean.
