The Ometepe Island

Ometepe is the largest fresh-water island in the world.  It was the sacred of two volcanoes (Concepción 1610 meters and Maderas 1340 meters) which the ancient people who wandered down from Mexico in search of the promised land must have encountered.

One can climb Maderas volcano and during the ascent you come upon beautiful waterfalls that spring from the crater lagoon located at the  top of this information.  A wide variety of wildlife will also surprise the visitors especially the resident monkeys which have been the focus of numerous scientific studies.

At the Ometepe island there are also impressive stone statues and petroglyphs which testify to the great cultural richness of the people who inhabited this place long ago.

Ometepe has the shape of a figure eight when seen from the air:  In October the cultural tradition called the fiesta of alcolá is celebrated.  To get to Ometepe you can take a ferry (cars can ride too!) from San Jorge, a town next door to Rivas on the shores of the lake of Nicaragua.

You can also catch a boat in the city of Granada, at the port.
