ASSIGNMENT 1

HISTORY

Penang is one of the earliest states in Malaysia where British declared as their settlement. The story began when Fort Cornwallis has been built and the commander that time want to expand the occupied land. But he ran out of people power to do that

One day, he came with a magnificent idea. He ordered the soldiers to shot gold coins to the deep jungle. As soon as the did it, the natives that most of them were Malays rushed into the jungle to find the gold coins. The easiest thing to find the gold coins by cutting all the trees

Using that idea, the British saved his soldiers' power, had a new clear land to be used to built a new town called Georgetown, and the gold coins of course, back to them because the Malays must used that gold coins to buy food from the British

The things in here is the British were acted as the GOD, the Malays were acted as the SLAVE and the deep jungle were the PLACE. It's a practical of INTENSION - ACT - PRODUCT

There is 2 point of views in this problem. The first perception, the Intension of the British was making a new place, the act was they shot the gold coins into the jungle, and the product was they got a new lands from cleared jungle

The other one is the Malay's intention is to get the gold coins, the act was they cut the trees and cleared the jungle, and the product was they got the gold coins

EUROCENTRIC OR NON-EUROCENTRIC STORY

In the British point of view, they get the Eurocentric style because even though they moved out of Malaysia, the Malaysian preserves the British cultures especially buildings. It's something that contrast from the Malay cultures. That means the British has a happily ever after ending which is an Eurocentric style of story. And the Malaysian get the sad ending or a non-Eurocentric style of story

So the problem in here is the British said it was a settlement in this Malay's Land. But then, they had a town hall and made the rules. it's a basic needs of a nation (EXECUTIVE - JUDICIARY - LEGISLATIVE). Then they make the Malaysian spells the alphabets like they do until now. Then nowadays, Malaysian must preserves the British cultures especially buildings, name of some roads and places uses the British name

DO YOU STILL THINK THE BRITISH CAME HERE JUST WANT TO MAKE A SETTLEMENT AT THE FIRST PLACE?
