Fulfilling the Dream
12 Ways your club can participate in Project D.R.E.A.M.
1) Have after school programs for elementary and middle school aged kids run by Key Clubbers. Many kids who have no one to go home to are more likely to use drugs, so targeting kids who are staying after school will make them less likely to get into trouble while also providing positive role models for the kids. The programs could or could not focus on drugs and alcohol, depending on the situation. The main goal is just to provide a place for kids to go to develop healthy goals and role models.
2) Encourage Builders Clubs and K-Kids in your own community. This will give kids goals and role models who are healthy. Kiwanis sponsored programs develop character and self-confidence through serving others.
3) Make posters with facts about drug use to hang in your school and in local elementary and middle schools.
4) Speak to a group of younger students at an elementary or middle school. This can be in connection with programs sponsored by local law enforcement like D.A.R.E.
5) Have a question and answer panel of Key Clubbers for students to ask questions about high school, any problems they might be having, or drugs.
6) Fundraiser for organizations that work to prevent drug abuse.
7) Participate in WAKE UP! LIVE BIG: BE SMOKE FREE
8) Support community organizations that create meaningful programs and activities for youth.
9) Have members of your club join mentoring programs like Big Brothers/Big Sisters
10) Listen to young children express their concerns.
11) Sponsor a drug and alcohol-free party for members of your own school on prom night, graduation, or any other time when problems tend to occur.
12) Recognize kids who are doing good for your community. Often kids do not get recognition for their successes. This recognition builds strong self-confidence and self-respect.
