If you're wondering how Web pages can be free, and what's the catch, the companies that host them usually say that it's paid for by advertising, but I think it's a little more complicated than that. It may be that eventually you will have to pay in order to keep your pages. Other than that I don't know of any catch. You just have to be aware that the terms of service make no guarantees of quality or reliability, and don't count on anything. You can find more information at FREE
Web page services at The Free Site.
To find out what GeoCities has to offer, make sure you know how to get back here, then try the Geocities Tour. I especially like the neighborhoods, the neighborhood centers, the community leaders, the children's neighborhood, and the activities and projects of the people in GeoCities. There have been some recent changes that are distressing some of us. The management has taken over the right side of our pages for promoting the GeoCities brand name. The advertising has become more intrusive and pervasive, and some of it is more offensive. Some of our favorite things have disappeared, such as the featured pages program which gave recognition to especially beneficial or enjoyable pages. Many recent improvements are full of bugs which plague members and visitors alike. All of this has been done without the slightest acknowledgment or apology for the inconveniences, other than some articles that appeared briefly in one forum in response to the most vocal and persistent protesters. It looks to me as if some of the most antagonistic and defiant protesters are watched carefully, and if they break any rules, even ones that are not generally enforced, they are denied access to their pages or their pages are removed. The rest of the people who are unhappy with the changes are simply ignored and their very existence denied. I have written to dozens of community leaders about all this, and the only ones who replied in any substantial way are no longer in GeoCities. In spite of all this, most of what I've always liked is still here, and the neighborhoods I've visited have found various ways to make up for the things we've lost. You can sometimes find background information and discussion of these problems at AlterIcon, or at the GeoCities Help Forum under "complaints."
