Charles' occupation is listed as "Capitalist" in the 1900 Census for Philadelphia, PA. He is living on Spruce St. with his wife, Mary C; his single son Charles J. and two sisters who were employed as "servants", Mary and Kate Duffy. Kate's dob was Aug 1872, and Mary's dob was Nov 1870.

 

On Brynmawr's page, it says that Charles Moselley Swain had his residence at 4500 Spruce Street on the S.W. corner of 45th St. in West Philadelphia, Pa. It described his home as being "of the most comfortable type", and typical of the type of home you foundd in West Philadelphia. He is also listed as the President of the City Trust Co., Director of the Merchants National Bank, former Councilman and son of the founder of the "Public Ledger".

 

In another site on the internet, you find,"Farther west, on the grounds at the southwest corner of 45th and Spruce Streets, Charles Moseley Swain, financier and founder of The Philadelphia Record, erected, in 1875, a mansion in which he lived until his death in 1904. He left a fortune of $1,800,000.00, but no will. Mr. Swain's mansion remained until 1960 when it was torn down. On September 20, 1962 ground was broken on the site for the University Mews, University City's first major residential construction in a generation."
