At her elementary school, St. Bernard's, Sister Richard, her fourth grade teacher and Sisters Charlotte, her eighth grade teacher, were among her fondest remembered instructors.
Before getting married, Audrey worked for the Bell Telephone Co. as a long distance operator. She worked there for a year, but left the job when my father informed her she would stay at home, and he would earn the family money. She made extra money when I was a child by sewing gowns and dresses for the ladies at our church. She also made many of our Easter dresses and prom gowns.
Audrey says she was living in the home of Anna Belle Kennard Rivers when she gave birth to Audrey (now Audra) Anne Rivers in a hospital in Baltimore. My father was still serving in WWII. My Aunt Pooge (Margaret Mary Maher Rivers) located an efficiency apartment for my mom to move into. It was on the third floor of a house that had a storefront on the first floor. This was the barbershop where my father and his brother got their hair cut since they were young boys. Sidney, the barber, owned the building which was located on the corner of Wyle and Park Heights Ave. in Baltimore. After my father was discharged from the Army Air Corps, they remained in this apartment until shortly before my birth in October of 1950. This is when they purchased the family home at 5411 Pembroke Ave. in Woodlawn, Md., just outside the Baltimore City limits.
She was very active in the Sodality and Catholic Daughter organizations in the Roman Catholic church to which she was a convert shortly after marrying. She had attended Catholic schools all through the years. When asked why she decided on joining the Catholic church, she said, "It wasn't an easy religion, and I just felt very comfortable."
