Our Constitution-

The Niagara University Philosophy Club Constitution

Preamble

We, the members of the Niagara University Philosophy Club, established to provide an open forum for the exchange of ideas, and to promote and document the diverse thought of individual students, do ordain and establish this constitution and subscribe to regulations, polices and Vincentian values of Niagara University.

Article I

Official Name of the Organization

The official name of the organization shall be the Niagara University Philosophy Club, hereafter, NUPC.

Article II

Purpose and Affiliation of the Organization

The purpose of this organization shall be as follows:

1. To promote the interaction between the Department of Philosophy and other academic departments within the university
2. To maintain the integrity of the philosophy curriculum
3. To promote intercollegiate activities in the study of philosophy and participation of students in professional conferences
4. To promote awareness of philosophy and philosophical issues
5. To encourage students to take philosophy courses
6. To promote social and academic interaction among the students interested in philosophy
7. To encourage and provide information about graduate study in philosophy
8. To provide awareness of career opportunities in philosophy
9. To promote interaction between the philosophy faculty and students

Activities that result in undue physical stress or any subtle or covert technique that will impair, make captive, or destroy any individual freedom of thought will not be tolerated.

This organization will adhere to all policies and regulations of Niagara University and the Vincentian Mission

Article III

Membership

Section I. Eligibility

1. All undergraduate students of Niagara University, full or part-time, regardless of major, shall be eligible for membership in the NUPC
2. Membership shall not be denied on the basis of race, skin color, religion, national origin, sexual orientation, age, gender, or disability.
3. All members are required to complete at least three hours of community service for the NUPC each semester
4. All members are required to pay at least $10 in dues each semester.
5. All members are required to attend at least one half of the semester’s meetings.

Article IV

Officers and Advisors

The NUPC Executive Council duties and Order of Succession shall be as follows:

Section I. President

1. The President shall act as the official liaison of the NUPC.
2. The President shall be responsible for organizing and conducting meetings, supervising and aiding the other officers in their duties as necessary
3. The President shall delegate responsibilities when he/she sees fit
4. The President shall enforce the constitution
5. The President is responsible for maintaining contact with the Advisor of the organization.

Section II. Vice President

1. The Vice President shall aid the President in activities and administrative affairs of the club.
2. The Vice President is responsible for NUPC public relations
3. The Vice President, in conjunction with the NUPC Advisor, shall arrange for the invitation of lecturers and other public functions.
4. The Vice President is responsible for keeping an accurate record of all community service hours for each semester. He/she must submit completed forms to the NUSGA and NUCAP office before NUSGA deadlines.

Section III. Secretary

1. The Secretary shall be responsible for keeping accurate minutes at each NUPC meeting.
2. The Secretary shall be responsible for regularly updating the NUPC membership roster.
3. The Secretary shall assist the Vice President in organizing community service events and maintaining the official records of that service.

Section IV. Treasurer

1. The Treasurer shall be responsible for maintaining an accurate record of all club funds.
2. The Treasurer shall be responsible for collecting member dues each semester.
3. The Treasurer shall be responsible for organizing at least one fundraising event for the NUPC each semester

Article V.

Committees

Committees may be formed by the officers of the organization to tackle any problems identified by the leadership of the club. Committees shall consist of a chair and committee members from among other interested members of the club. All chairs of committees shall report to the officers at regular meetings and be required to attend all meetings.

Article VI.

Elections

Elections shall be held before the week of final examinations at the end of each spring semester. A special meeting shall be held prior to the end of the semester to allow for the nomination of candidates and the actual election. This meeting shall be advertised at least one week in advance. All candidates must be present to be nominated. Because of the clubs fervent support of integrity and fairness officers will be elected by approval voting. Members may not hold more than one office at a time. In the event that an office becomes vacant during the course of a year for any reason, the other officers shall appoint a member or officer (in this case the officer will have to relinquish him/her current position and another non-office holding member will replace him/her) to replace the missing one. Should the office of the President become vacant, however, the current Vice President shall assume the office of the President, and a new Vice President shall be appointed by the officers.

Article VII.

Advisors

The NUPC shall at all times, in order to maintain the integrity of the organization and to remain eligible for official organizational status at Niagara University, have an advisor who is a faculty member in the NU Philosophy Department

Article VIII.

Meetings and Attendance

Section I. Meetings

The meetings of the Philosophy Club shall be held at least once a month while school is in session, at a time appointed by agreement of the officers and advisor, and not to be held during times when school is not in session.

Section II. Attendance

The attendance of all officers is strongly encouraged at all meetings, and members are required to attend at least one half of all meetings.

Article IX.

Amendments

Amendments to the Constitution may be suggested by any member of the club and must be approved by the advisor and a 2/3 majority of the NUPC in order to be enacted.
