Newsom
    Charles Marion Newsom lovingly called Charley, was born February 1, 1835 in Georgia.  Little is known about his life up to the time war was declared between the States.  He served the South by enlisting as a private in Captain Lennard's Company L of the 12th Louisiana Infantry, on July 10, 1861.  He served with this group until he was trasferred on December 8, 1863, under orders of General Buford  to serve as Ordinance Teamster under General Forrest until the end of the war.
     Charley came to Texas and on September 6, 1877, at the age of 43, married Martha Washington Rebecca Cranford.  She was born Jan. 22, 1859 in Woodville, Tyler Co., Texas.  She was the daughter of William and Samantha Cranford.  Charley was a farmer.  He and Martha lived in Robertson Co., and then later Leon County.  They were the parents of 11 children.
     1.  Silas, born June 22, 1878.  Silas married Delia Davis.  Their children:  Lloyd, Ollie, Paul, Liddy, Inez, Clara Mae, and Mabel.
     2.  Lewis, born May 31, 1880, married Susie Smith.  Their children: Cecil, Lewis D., twins Ava, Adron and Charlie.
     3. Samantha, born March 19, 1882, married William Clompton Boyd.  They were the parents of:  Mary, Bill, Albert, Worth, Ora, Emma, Zula, and Wilma.
    4.  Matthew, born May 6, 1884, married Minnie.  Their children: Raymond, Effie Mae, Edward, and Viola.
     5.  Onus, born Dec. 11, 1886, married Nettie Wiilingham.  Their children:Opal, Mildred, and Imo Jean.
     6.  Emory, born Feb. 19, 1889, marriedAlice Sanders.  Their children:  M.Z, Thelma, Margie, Virgie, Euphenia, and Daisy.

George, born in 1891, married Effie Hennard.  Their
children: Francis and Doris.
    8.  Emma Earl, bornJune 2, 1893, married Emmett Willingham.  Their children:  Emmett M., Ervan T, Arvol, Illa Fay, Lila May, Clovis, Arnell A., Hayse E., Donald L., Melvin R, and Wyndle E.
     9.  Martha Pearl, born June 2, 1893, married Lige Kessner.  Their children: Eula Estelle, William Travis, Lewis Thomas, Izadell, Hattie Rae, and Luah Fay.
     10. Clark, born Feb 8, 1896, married Edna Hennard.  Their children: Reeves, Martha Pearl, Joe Felton, and Lida Bell.
     11. Rex A., the youngest, born, March 22, 1889,  married Eva Roberts.  Their children: Damon, Delbert, Calvin, Darrell, Sybil, Vernell, Bonnie, and Zane.
     Charley lived to collect a Civil War Pension from 1906 until his death.  Charley died August 21, 1914 and is buried in Marquez Cemetery.
