willingly takes that chance every time they report for duty.
The following Law Enforcement Officers have given their lives to protect the citizens of the State of New Hampshire: |
Inspector William M. Moher
Died in the line of duty on July 3, 1921 Inspector William Moher died the day after being shot by a robbery suspect. Inspector Moher was able to return fire and kill the suspect. Officer Albert L. Colson Shot while trying to disarm a male subject. Patrolman James Roche Patrolman James Roche died after being shot by a burglary suspect. On September 23, 1928, Officer James Roche approached a suspicious male at a residence on his beat. The man attacked Officer Roche with a pistol. Officer Roche mortally wounded his attacker, but not before he was shot four times. Officer Roche was taken to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on October 15th. Sheriff Elect Harry Leavitt While returning home after transporting a subject to the State Hospital in Concord, Sheriff Elect Harry Leavitt and a passenger died after the cruiser they were driving went off the road on Route 16 in Ossipee and struck a tree. Trooper Raymond Elliott Trooper Raymond Elliott died in a motor vehicle accident. Trooper Harold B. Johnson Trooper Harold Johnson, along with Chief Andrew Molloy of the Lancaster Police Department died when his cruiser collided with a train. Chief Andrew T. Malloy Chief Andrew Malloy, along with Trooper Harold Johnson of the New Hampshire State Police died when the cruiser he was in collided with a train. Chief Fred T. Towle Died of a heart attack during an arrest. Officer Michael Latvis Jr. - 38 years old Officer Michael Latvis died when a car collided with his ambulance which was responding on an emergency call. On December 21, 1956, Officer Michael Latvis and Sergeant John Barry were answering a medical emergency call. The ambulance was hit by another car at an intersection and Officer Latvis was thrown from the front seat. He was taken by Sergeant Barry and neighbors to a local hospital. He died the next day of head injuries. Lieutenant Ivan Hayes Died of a heart attack while arresting a drunk driver. Ptl. Edward C. Graziano - 26 years old Patrolman Edward Graziano died after his motorcycle was struck by a car. Conservation Officer William Mooney Died of a stroke. Conservation Officer Gary Waterhouse Died of a heart attack. Assistant Chief Louis A. Sheets - 29 years old Assistant Chief Louis Sheets died when his cruiser was struck by a dump truck driven by a 16 year old. Officer Robert Devoid - 36 years old Officer Robert Devoid died while on an emergency blood run with Officer Dorman Wheelock, after being involved in a head-on collision. Officer Dorman Wheelock - 40 years old Died in the line of duty on April 23, 1970 Officer Jerome O. Piet - 32 years old Officer Piet died of a heart attack after arresting a subject following a physical confrontation. Correctional Officer Robert C. Prescott Died after being stabbed by an inmate. Conservation Officer James Clark Died of a stroke while stocking pheasants. Acting Chief Armand J. Roussel - 50 years old Died in the line of duty on October 27, 1971 Acting Chief Armand Roussel died of gunshot wounds 12 days after trying to convince a parolee who was holding a hostage to surrender. Chief Roussel was unarmed when he was shot at point blank range. On October 15, 1971. A hostage situation occurred on this day. Chief Roussel responded from his home. Calvin Parker was holding a gun on another citizen, threatening to kill him if the Chief didn't arrive. Chief Roussel came and tried to talk to Parker. Parker, without warning, shot Chief Roussel as he approached. On October 27, 1971, Chief Roussel died of his injuries. Chief Charles Knowles Died in the line of duty on August 12, 1973 Died of injuries after being kicked in the chest during a domestic. Lieutenant Robert Hollis Died in the line of duty on March 5, 1975 Died of a heart attack. Officer Ralph W. Miller - 25 years old Died in the line of duty on October 2, 1976 Officer Ralph Miller died after being shot in the chest by a teenager who fired through a screen door as he and another officer approached the residence for a noise complaint. Trooper Richard F. Champy Died in the line of duty on February 3, 1978 Trooper Champy died of a heart attack after fighting with a man who was a passenger in a car that he stopped while investigating a hit and run accident. Ptl. Donald R. Kowalski - 25 years old Died in the line of duty on September 4, 1979 Patrolman Donald Kowalski died from injuries sustained after his parked cruiser was hit by a stolen car, driven by a 16 year old. Officer William E. O'Neil Sr. Officer William O'Neil died from injuries, 11 days after his vehicle went off the road and struck a tree. Chief James H. Collins - 57 years old
Sgt. Thomas C. Kelly - 35 years old Died in the line of duty on September 17, 1989 Sgt. Thomas Kelly, a range officer died of respiratory failure from prolonged exposure to lead and toxic gases. Trooper Joseph E. Gearty - 28 years old
Trooper Gary Parker - 30 years old Died in the line of duty on November 29, 1989 Trooper Gary Parker was killed with Trooper Joseph Gearty and the prisoner that they were transporting when the cruiser that he was driving was struck by wood that had fallen from a tractor trailer truck. Chief Ralph C. Brooks - 41 years old Chief Brooks died of a heart attack during an investigation. Sgt. James S. Noyes - 40 years old Died in the line of duty on October 3, 1994. Sgt. James Noyes was shot and killed while trying to talk a despondent man out of his house. Sergeant James Noyes, the lead negotiator of the State Police SWAT team, responded to a standoff in Gilford where a despondent man had barricaded himself inside his home with a rifle, threatening to harm himself and others. Sgt. Noyes spent hours trying to talk to the distraught man, without success. The man later shot Sgt. Noyes and then killed himself. Sgt. Noyes was struck with two bullets, the first entered into his right wrist. The second bullet pierced through the armhole of his bulletproof vest, and pierced his heart. Officer Melvin Keddy - 52 years old Died in the line of duty on September 7, 1995 Officer Melvin Keddy was struck and killed by a drunk driver while investigating an accident. Lieutenant Don Eaton Died in the line of duty on June 13, 1997 Lieutenant Don Eaton died of a heart attack. Trooper Leslie G. Lord - 45 years old Died in the line of duty on August 19, 1997 Trooper Leslie Lord was killed after being shot by a subject. Trooper Lord along with Trooper Phillips was shot and killed by a man after being stopped by Trooper Phillips. The man opened fire on Trooper Phillips with an semi-automatic rifle, wounding him. Trooper Lord, who arrived to assist was shot and killed before he could exit the area. After returning and killing Trooper Phillips, the man, heavily armed and wearing a bullet proof vest, stole Trooper Phillips' cruiser and drove to the office of a local attorney and newspaper office where he shot and killed a part-time judge with whom he had a long standing feud with. He then shot and killed the newspaper editor who had tried to subdue him. The man shot and wounded 4 other State and Federal officers before he was shot by Police in the State of Vermont. Trooper Scott E. Phillips - 32 years old Died in the line of duty on August 19, 1997 Trooper Scott Phillips was killed after being shot by a subject. Trooper Phillips, along with Trooper Lord was shot and killed by a man after being stopped by Trooper Phillips. The man opened fire on Trooper Phillips with an semi-automatic rifle, wounding him. Trooper Phillips was able to escape but, after killing Trooper Lord, the man returned and shot Trooper Phillips four more times killing him. The man, heavily armed and wearing a bullet proof vest stole Trooper Phillips' cruiser and drove to the office of a local attorney and newspaper office where he shot and killed a part-time judge with whom he had a long standing feud with. He then shot and killed the newspaper editor who had tried to subdue him. The man shot and wounded 4 other State and Federal officers before he was shot by Police in the State of Vermont. Officer Jeremy T. Charron - 24 years old Died in the line of duty on August 24, 1997 Officer Jeremy Charron was killed after being shot by a subject. Officer Charron was shot and killed while checking a suspicious car at a local beach. Both subjects, who were parolees, fled the scene and were arrested later in the morning for robbing a convenience store, leading officers on a chase and shooting at the pursuing officers. Officer Charron was wearing his vest and was able to return fire during the shooting. Ironically, he had just returned from the funerals of Troopers Leslie Lord and Scott Phillips the day before. Officer Charron graduated in July from the New Hampshire Police Academy. |
