1999 Entry Draft Review
Henrik Zetterberg
In what was no surprise for the 1999 NVW Entry Draft, it was busy busy busy.   Trades went down shifting not only picks but players all around the league - and there weren't really any surprises with the top 24 picks of the 1st round. For starters, it surely was no surprise when Calgary GM Cole Wilkinson stepped up to the podium to announce that with the 1st overall pick in the 1999 draft, they were selecting Henrik Zetterberg.  "We knew for weeks that Zetts was on their radar, and that nothing could be done to take GM Cole from diverting his route or trading his pick" said one NVW league official.  From there, everything took it's proper course.
As you can see here, a lot of picks traded hands over and over again.  GMs were busy and ruthless to get into the spot they wanted to get in to make sure the player they wanted didn't get away.  "By far one of the busiest entry drafts we have ever encountered.  There was tons of paper work to get filed and processed.  It was pure insanity for most of the day" said an NVW official. The only eye popping picks were the picks that GMs felt they rather secure their teams needs with youth potential then take the player that was best at that position.  For instance, St. Louis took Mike Comrie over Brian Rafalski and Mike Commodore.  But all in all, the draft went as predicted and planned. A few surprises that went in the second round which could of and possibly should of been first round selections were:  Niclas havelid, Juraj Kolnik, John Graham, and Radek Martinek to name a couple. Then we had two steals in the 3rd round where the Philadelphia Flyers (via the Minnesota Saints) grabbed Ruslan Fedetenko, and the Winnepeg Jets got tough, gritty Brian McGrattan. And now, onto training camps to learn how to skate with the big boys.  Who will make the biggest impact and who will be the best buy of this draft?  We sure will find out within the year - at least we hope.  Until then....
