PERFORMANCES 2005 - 2006
The Nanakuli Intermediate Band's performances at Ala Moana Center Stage, Nanaikapono and Nanakuli Elementary was very successful. The performances allowed us to represent Nanakuli in a positive way. The second semester will feature 2 performing groups with the addition of the Select Beginning Band.

ZERO TOLERANCE
The Band teachers, students and administration will be enforcing this new policy:
1. attendance - early is on time, on time is late
*we will not tolerate unexcused abseneces or tardies
"Lock Outs"

   * we will not tolerate irresponsibility
3. engaged with effort - focused and doing your best
*we will not tolerate slacking, and laziness
4. team work -
TEAM   Together Everyone Achieves More
*we will not tolerate selfishness,  be a team player
5. represent - you will represent yourself, parents, teachers, school and community in a
positive way. Bring Honor and Pride to Nanakuli

"Second to none"

GRADUATION BAND
Over 60 Intermediate Band students, grades 7 and 8 will be joining  forces with the High School Band for the 2006 commencement for Nanakuli. 23 of them currently in 8th grade have signed up for High School Band next year.

PERFECT ATTENDANCE
Mr. Miura completd his 21st consecutive year of perfect attendance. The last time Mr. Miura called in sick was in 1984." I'm trying to set an example for the band students" says Mr. Miura. Hopefully our students will realize the importance of coming to school. Thank you to the Nanakuli Administration for making the recognition at a recent faculty meeting.
"Early is on Time"...   "On Time is Late"

BAND BANQUET 2006
The Nanakuli Band Students enjoyed the Banquet held at the Pacific Beach Hotel on Saturday, May 27. Criteria for the banquet were: passing classes, attendance for after school rehearsals, performances as a member of the Concert Band. Buffet dinner, games, prizes, door prizes, dancing and fun all were included.

GOOD NEWS FOR 7th and 8th GRADERS for 2005-06 year
Pulliam and the Nanakuli Administration has decided that all Intermediate students will be able to take at least one elective class. Ramp up in both English and Math is of the past. After Mr. Miura met with Pulliam, they were convinced that electives may help students meet AYP and improve student achievement.  Lessons learned in band include: Math, Science, Foreign Language(Italien), History. In addition, students learn discipline, teamwork, citizenship, responsibility and improve social skills, focusing, listening skills, leadership skills,  and more.

BUILDING UP THE PROGRAM
The 2005  Beginning Band became the 2006  Intermediate Band. Next year, Nanakuli is anticipating an Intermediate Band of 50 students (period 4) and 147 incoming 7th grade beginning band students into 3 periods. Next year, the Middle School band program will be increasing from  2005: 103 students to 148,  2006: 148 to 217.

RESEARCH STUDIES
Research shows that students enrolled in band improve up to 15 percent on standardized tests. Band students become more focued, disciplined, and are engaged in their learning. Studies also show a better balance in developing both left and right sides of the brain. Band could possibly be a better solution than ramp ups. Most successful schools on the mainland are centered around a strong solid band program.

CDs of the concert are available for $10 each.
