1983 NHHS CROSS COUNTRY
The 1983 Wildcat Cross Country team was the best
yet in the young NHHS C.C. history. Even though few in number, this team
set some big goals, and worked hard to reach them. The one main goal was
to reach State. The turning point of the season happened to be the very
first meet at Rossville. The Cats ran well and brought home their first
trophy with a third place
finish out of twelve teams. From there, things began to blossom. The
improvement from last year, 10th out of 14 was tremendous. The early season
of "hard" work had paid off. From Rossville we went to Holton to a 3A -
4A meet. On a tough course with larger schools, this was a tough race.
Out of the five teams that beat us, two were 4A and the other three would
end the season with NHHS at the State Met with the Cats beating one of
them. We continued to run well until Regionals, winning two meets, taking
3rd Out of 9 teams twice, and placing 4th Out of 11 at another 3A - 4A
meet at Silver Lake. Due to the increase of student population, Heights
jumped from 2A to 3A making their goal of going to State a harder goal
to reach. The Cats were to reach their goal. We traveled to Riley County's
home course to compete with nine other schools for the chance to go to
Manhattan to the 1983 State C.C. Meet. Riley County, a team we had previously
beaten twice, used their home course advantage to be the only team to beat
the Cats. Riley county 1st - NHHS 2nd. A loss we would avenge later.
On November 5, we traveled to Manhattan to the State C.C. Meet. The
Cats came through, beating Perry-Lecompton, who had beaten us badly at
Holton, and edging Out Riley County for 6th place in class 3A. The goal
had been
reached. The 1983 squad, dealing with a new coach, showed much pride
and determination and
have a record to be proud of as it goes down into the record books.
Congratulations on a job well done.
