In 1981, Northern Heights.Cross Country, in only its second year, undertook the unenviable task of competing against some of the most powerful 3-A, 4-A, and 5-A schools in Kansas in preparing for their regional meet. Although somewhat short on experience, people improved, and even while running against stiff competition, the Wildcats ran extremely well. The biggest surprise of the season came on Halloween. With experience gained from the stiff competition earlier, the Wildcats were awesome in placing 4th out of 11 teams in the Ottawa 2-A Regional. In a storybook ending, the Wildcats had earned a trip to the State Cross Country meet in Wamego. One week later the Wildcats placed 12th in class 2-A Cross Country. All of the 2-A teams in the State meet had been there one year earlier, all that is, except for Northern Heights. A year earlier Heights had been getting ready in its very first year. In their second year our runners were in the State meet! In their third year Who knows? ... Maybe another storybook ending?
